A Look at Texas Head Coaches and 100 win Milestones

Numbers are interesting. Of course circumstances create different context, and naysayers and pundits will always try to shoot holes in any logical analysis. But numbers can still provide a view into trends and possibilities.

The top 10 all-time winningest head coaches in Texas football history are legendary. Just as impressive is the longevity of these coaches.

The comparison that I wanted to show is how many seasons it took these all-time greats to reach 100 wins. Listed along with the top 10 are an area great, Dan Hooks, a couple of more recent greats in Gary Joseph at Katy and Todd Dodge who has led several great programs. And one other highly regarded coach Jack Alvarez who has done well and who once applied for the PNG job.

Most if not all of these coaches had the advantage of elite talent pools. Randy Allen, Gary Joseph and Todd Dodge being the most notably advantaged.

The numbers show that the top 10 coaches required 13.5 seasons on average to reach their 100th win.

There is a certain coach in Port Neches we all know that achieved the same in his 13th season. Interesting to say the least for such a young coach to achieve that at Port Neches-Groves. Amazing actually. PN-G does not have the talent of schools like Austin Westlake, Katy, Highland Park, etc. But someday Faircloth will also be among the top winningest coaches in Texas. The numbers and trends make that clear. And he is a geat coach and AD regardless.

Gary Joseph's numbers at Katy are impressive. 13.2 wins per season. 90% winning percentage. He has only lost 22 games in 18 seasons. Not to mention he has 5 state championships as a head coach plus 3 more as a defensive coordinator. Others may have longevity and more total wins, but no one has his complete resume. I know Katy has a recruiting program, or excuse me, Katy has benefited from the coincidence of talent moving into its district, but winning 90% of your games and 5 state championships in the highest classification is impressive. Putting talent in position to win at the highest level is still great coaching.

If PN-G had those move-ins they would also go deep into the playoffs every year. Just about any team would. Carthage is another example of what that type of 'program' can do for high school or college athletics.

Just need to find a way to get the defense to consistently play fundamental ball. It's often not easy, especially at the high school level where the players are turned over every 1-3 years.

Heck, the University of Texas has the same struggles right now with their defense. It's easy to talk about but not easy to teach and see adoption of best techniques, or to even have the players you need to execute a good scheme. And you can't coach size and speed into a player.

Forgive me if I’ve told this before
But I’ve known (of) Scott Surratt since 5th-6th grade (he’s my first cousin’s best friend and later step brother lol) then he played baseball at my college. Let me tell you he wants to beat you at checkers without losing a piece if possible
When we played intermural flag football not only did he get the “retired” athletes from various sports to join his team (basketball, baseball, etc) he also got a sponsorship from the local sports card shop (Yogi’s) so they had jerseys. (Unheard of at our tiny college) they beat us 77-7 once and he was still taking advantage of the student refs’ lack of knowledge of the rules. Lol. I make my dad LOL when I tell those stories
He crafter plays that we only knew where the ball was as the player was coming out of the end zone with the ball lol.

Sounds like he looks for any angle to win. And if some good football players want to ‘move in’ and play for him, he’s good with that. He might even take time to give them directions on how to get there. ;)
