2021 DCTF Preview - Montgomery Bears

Coach:
John Bolfing. Lettermen R/L: 28/29. Starters returning O/D: 4/4. 2020: 8-4 area finalist/5-1 district. Key losses: Dalton Merryman (Tarleton State).

Players to watch: RB Jalen Washington (5-9, 195, 4.5), QB Brock Bolfing (6-2, 200, 4.9), LB Leslie Williams (5-10, 220, 4.8), DL Zach Cooper (5-10, 225), DB Mason White (6-2, 190, 4.6), K Nick de las Alas (5-8, 160). Top juniors: DB Kyler Wilson (5-11, 160, 4.8), WR Justin Herman (5-8, 160, 4.8). Top sophomore: OL Cooper Hydock (6-1, 230).

Other prospects: OL Jake Hird, OL Johnathon Edmiston, OL Justin Snively, DE Bryce Treille, LB Kade Nuchia, WR Jaden Williams, RB Logan McGaughy, OL Sebastian Stephenson.

2021 notes: The senior-heavy Bears rolled to a strong second-place finish in 10-5A Division II last year and advanced to the area round of the playoffs. Only four starters return on both sides of the ball, but there's some quality on offense with four-year starters QB Bolfing (2,504 yards, 23 TDs passing) and RB Washington (1,499 yards, 19 TDs rushing) leading the way. The Bears do have big questions on the offensive line and at WR, where only Herman (26-318 yards, 4 TDs receiving) returns with significant experience. LB Williams (137 tackles, 1 INT) is always around the ball and a prototypical linebacker, while DL Cooper (88 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT) is relentless and extremely quick on the inside. K de las Alas is a weapon late in the game, as Bolfing says he's automatic inside of 40 yards.

While Montgomery has allowed a substantial number of points, their defense shows a lot of positive attributes. They will not be a pushover.
  • well coached
  • instinctive/well positioned
  • aggressive
  • swarm to the ball
  • fast
  • proficient in shedding blocks
  • tackle well
Their best defensive player is #40 Leslie Williams, a 5-11 220 pound middle linebacker with 4.8 speed. Williams leads the Bears in tackles by far with 198 including 12 tackles for a loss. That's 18 tackles per game.

If you want to take a look at Montgomery in action, skip to 31:54 of this video.

#1 (RB), #5 (WR) and #9 (QB) are their top offensive threats,

On defense #40 (LB) is their top player.

(Huntsville was not very good this season at 4-5)

I would be tempted to run to Jansen Ware's side and have Ware seal off #40. Ware is that good. But Montgomery runs a 3-4 scheme and Ware will be covered up with a pretty good DE. So that's easier said than done.

Montgomery is 12-16-1 all-time in playoff contests. Their most successful playoff run to date was 2010 when they reached the quarterfinal round. They lost that game to Friendswood 48-28. The Bears lost to Fort Bend Marshall in the Area round last season 48-28. 2021 marks the 9th time that Montgomery has reached the second round.

Montgomery head coach John Bolfing is in his 17th season with the Bears. His overall record at Montgomery is 113-72-0 and 8-10 in playoff games.

Montgomery hasn't been overpowering in its last 3 games, all against so-so opposition. Perhaps there is a chance.

"Brock Bolfing became the starting quarterback as a freshman and has thrown for 8,590 yards and 72 touchdowns (as well as nine rushing scores) in 43 career varsity games.

Washington has rushed for 4,290 yards (a career-best 1,964 this season), 56 touchdowns (27 this season) and has five receiving scores in his career.

Williams has 467 tackles (191 solo, 276 assists) in his four-year career with six sacks, two interceptions, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries."

Some PN-G players need to step up and counter these guys with their own great play. Stop these guys, block or run over that linebacker. Tonight is a chance for this PN-G team to add to their legacy in history and continue playing another week.
