PORT NECHES — At a special board meeting on Monday, the Port Neches-Groves baseball team got its new head man.
Sweeny head coach Scott Carter was named as the newest PN-G baseball head coach. He replaces Mark Brevell, who resigned to take a job at Groves Middle School last month.
Carter led Sweeny to plenty of success in his time there, including a state tournament appearance in 2012, when Sweeny lost to West in the state semifinals.
Carter was named District 24-3A Coach of the Year last season after the Bulldogs took the district title for the third straight season. Last season, Sweeny lost to Bridge City in the area round of the playoffs.
“We had a lot of great candidates,” PN-G boys athletic director Brandon Faircloth said. “Three things stood out about coach Carter. His experience, first, was important. He’s coached in multiple programs and been successful. Second is that success. He’s also coached in the state baseball tournament and coached in the high school all-star game. Third, he’s a great teacher. Anytime you go out and hire someone, you want the best fit for the students at PN-G. We found that with him.”
Carter’s daughter, Candyce, will be a senior for Lamar’s softball team next year, adding some familiarity to the area for the elder Carter.
“His daughter being in the area helped (his knowledge of the area),” Faircloth said. “But, I think the success that PN-G baseball has had in the past is pretty common knowledge.”
Carter will also be a part of Faircloth’s football coaching staff and will take over the defensive line. Former DL coach Mike Arnaud also took a job at Groves Middle School this spring.
PN-G added two more football coaches to its staff, including Steve Griffith, who will help coach the offensive line with Joe Dale Cary, and Roy Gatlin, who will coach the secondary. Dustin Weisinger held that spot last season before taking a job with Austin Westlake this spring.
Gatlin comes to PN-G from Lumberton while Griffith previously coached at Liberty.
PN-G football opens two-a-day workouts on Aug. 5.
