He was one-of-a-kind. The Oilers were never the same after Bud Adams fired Bum. The 1964 PNG team he coached (with Wade as QB and MLB) was one of our best teams that didn't make the playoffs. They lost a heart breaker to Nederland 22-6 and only one team went to the playoffs back in those days. There were 12 players on that team that received football scholarships and many were stars in college (Wade Phillips, Mike Simpson, Robert Hall, John Snell, Pat Walker). And Simpson went on the play a few seasons in the NFL. That team also included the sprinters that set the national high school 440 yd relay record in 1965 (Mike Simpson, Lyman Landry, Randy Byrd, Kenneth Bernard and Dwight Williams). Hard to believe - 5 guys that ran a 10.0 100 yd dash or better on the same PNG team. One of my favorite PNG teams of all time.
