Cherokee representing at AT&T Stadium

I watched a few minutes of the Argyle-Navasota state championship game replay, and distinctly heard Cherokee being played.

I guess one of those schools liked it enough to make it their fight song.

Maybe, just maybe, Cherokee, and the spirit it represents, has become part of the fabric of Texas high school.

I am proud of my hometown heritage and will dare to say that PN-G is right up there at the top of what Texas high school football lore is all about. :texasflag: :helmet:

Speaking of PNG football history, if you have access to any historical data not already on the pngindians.com web site, please consider sharing it. I would like to enhance the historical references so that we can make sure it's there for future generations, and fellow football fans everywhere.

Interesting. Was it Argyle's song? Maybe we can find it, and check out the history of the song.

Watched several of the games on tv. I am taken back by number of d1 type athletes. Also the dominating programs with multiple/ recent state champs in the last 10 years or so. How do you break the cycle? It's disheartening somewhat

The age of the coaches was a surprise too.

I was thinking the same thing. How the hell does a small town team like a PN-G have a shot any more? Going up against big metro area schools with a completely different talent base.

Answer is, it's tough, which is why we have championship appearances about every 20 years. It requires an extremely talented and special group of players as PN-G had in 74-77. And to a lesser extent, in 1999. As seen in 2014, even having record setting skill position players can only take you so far.

You have to be a scoring machine, and have a championship winning defense.

Also after watching all the games we have to get bigger on both lines. What killed WOS was they had athletes, but no depth. And agree on the defense, that has been our Achilles heal the past 4 years. If the other team puts an athlete in the wildcat we can't stop it. (WOS, Nederland, Central, Dayton)

One common theme of all the teams 4A and up that won this weekend was size on both lines. It all starts up front. Look at how much better Dallas is now that they dominate the OLine. They need to get better on the DLine though if they wanna win it all.

besides the large O lines and D lines, most of the state champions had fast, shifty backs. The running backs seemed to have great abilities at stopping and twisting, turning and running a different direction if the hole was plugged up. They could bounce out and go for big gains. Also, I noticed that alot of the QB's were very athletic and could tuck the ball and hall butt. Kinda like ol' Johnny football did at A&M. On Defense it looked to me that the teams that put the most pressure on the QB's ran 4 man lines and sent in a linebacker on almost every play.
Next year, with Giblin returning we are in another great position for receivers. Let's pray they all stay healthy.

That might be the problem, we don't run a 4 man DL and the day of the drop back passer is coming to an end.

What I saw was unreal athletes at the qb position and teams that made plays when they need to. In my view, these top few programs will be almost impossible to get passed.

I still believe our program with Fairclothe is great and though we might not have the talent(as the all district and All state selections reflect) that those programs with multiple D1 and all staters have, 4 of 6 or so teams go to the playoffs every year and we should be in that 4 team group. Our kids do right, look good, learning life lessons, have great facilities, fans and have what seems to be a good Christian man in charge with tons of tradition.

Remember on the 75 state team that ranked like 2 in the Nation had 6 all staters and 15 all district in 75 with Giblin, Weber, Ethridge, Bellotii, Shipley, Brack, Robinson, Mcdougle going to college on scholarships. Not to mention Buck, Havard and Johnson didn't go to college.

:woohoo:

The reason we have been able to put together those team that went to State is because we have the special player or two come through every so often. When they do you still have to have been blessed with the stars aligned to make it so. Good example If Faircloth's first team in 09 with the great defense and his second team in 10 were to have been combined they may have went to state that 2nd season. The stars would have been aligned . They were just off by one season.

Good point, actually seasons 75/76 I was referring to.

You are so right on the qb and luck. Giblin causing the fumble that Jack returned to start the run of 20 points to win state.

When I think back on how good we really were (# 2 in the Nation) it kinda blows me away 40 years later. All the success go to,Ethridge who had a kick ass staff, Troy, Clearman, Green, carswell, Winn, Davis, Nunez, Bush , etc... and brought the lug with him who would have been a middle linebacker any where else. He too was the leader and qb both those seasons and didn't say much just did what it took, everytime.

53-55 similar too in football players, staff and luck. Dorsey's run from guard.

 go NDNS

Forgot Griffith, Aggie and Delcome on the college list - probably others too.
