Defense wins championships

Reading about all the state championship games yesterday, the predominant theme was defense, defense, defense, and strong, ball controlling running games. The video game like, high powered spread offenses were not so much a force in the 2015 state championship contests. But ultimately I think the physical aspect is what truly makes the difference. Speed, quickness, conditioning and strength are the true variables that make either an offense or defense formidable. How you get to that point is as much a factor of your talent pool as anything else. Combine that with good coaching and discipline/execution, and you have the formula for a state championship caliber team. When a team like the 2015 Katy Tigers can field a defensive force that overwhelms any offensive scheme, any opponent will face slim odds to win.

One thing that I saw that really impressed me with the Katy defense was their tackling ability. They were bringing down LT on the first attempt with a solid tackle. None of this grabbing at the shirt and trying to pull down the defender, but a hard nosed grabbing at the waist or legs and taking them down. They also were very quick and on point of anticipating and reading the play.

That gets back to being taught not to do that, and practicing proper techniques at full speed and contact.

Agreed, they just didn't miss Tackles. They stated was from practice practice practice at tackling at full speed in practice!!!! And if you noticed some of these LARGE schools are not afraid to use players both ways!!

I agree, defense wins championships. Katy is a unique program. They dress 100+ kids. No one plays both ways. They are 2 deep in all three phases of the game. They always seem to have an OL with 3 or 4 kids playing QT C, SG and ST in the 6'3" - 6'6" 225lbs. - 300lbs. range. They always seem to have a TE in the 6'3" or 6'4" 220lbs. range. Every year they have an above-average TB who is usually a D-1 recruit, and this year's version of the Katy Tigers had 4 D-1 kids on defense, led by the MLB Paddy Fisher who is 6'3" 225 lbs. and he can run from sideline to sideline. They seem to have an endless supply of size and talent.

WO-S is amazing. The incredible shrinking school keeps churning out wins. They do play kids both ways because they have to. The WO-S QB is a winner. Rock solid composure, sees the entire field, throws the ball all over the yard, and he is efficient with his throws. Give the OC credit, he calls plays to get the ball to play makers. I like how WO-S attacks match-ups. They find a weakness and go after it. If the run is there, they will run it. If they need to throw it, they will. Back to the WO-S QB, he is a much better athlete than people think. He looks rail thin and like he does not move all that quick, but he does move around when he needs to and he does it just quick enough to extend the play. He always looks down the field. If he stays healthy, no reason to think WO-S will not win it all again next year. WO-S was faster than Celina. But, it all starts at WO-S with defense. They are fast. On defense, WO-S was at the point of attack before the Celina offense could get going.

Go Indians. Peace.
