Good reading for the common football fan

Nice! Wish our defense had all this reading material to start the season...they must’ve read it going into that last game though!

Being someone who has broken other players bones and hit so hard that I would see stars on many occasions, I cannot relate to or accept lightweight tackling on the football field. But I do recognize the awareness and concern of brain injuries. In the ‘old days’ a good old ‘slobber knocker’ hit was the ultimate goal. Maybe that’s not a good idea any longer, but the fundamental techniques remain much the same with more emphasis on using pads rather than helmet on contact. There still must be some force behind the tackle to stop the runners momentum, or be run over. And you’ve got to wrap up and play through the tackle. This has to become second nature and is only achievable through repetition!

It’s also interesting to observe rugby tackling. Same concepts. This really emphasizes that footwork, being in the right position with a solid base, and tackling through the runner is ideal
