Combines are cool and often get you recognition to go on to the next level, but imo, it's what you do on the field that counts. I don't see how Bertrand could not have been the best RB and Nelson the best receiver given the #'s they put up last year. Oh well, atleast they were mentioned as notables. I guess these things are all about projections and growth, but if you haven't got the skills, what different does it make.

At a combine they don't look at stats. They only evaluate based upon what your showing that day. If you go out and play normal and a few others are mad men out there showing moves (intentionally) or getting past a defender or blocker then they will get a harder look. But, when the recruiting process kicks in and the recruiters start watching films then they get a better idea of how you really play. A combine is more like a time to be a big show off. Alot of those guys show and perform better than they do in games. At this combine they had no pads on, no helmets etc. But its alot different when your getting hit and when you hear the footsteps of someone about to nail you when you go up for a ball. All in all its a very controlled environment. So yeah your gonna have standouts who you have never heard of before. I feel our boys will be recruited more heavily because of consistency and proof is in the game films not on the combine field. The combines get your name out there. If a recruiter is interested they will call the head coach, get film and come to games. If you go to a recruiting site all the film is nothing more than the best plays a player has had in games. It could be a 5 minute long film of that person, and show 10 plays were they broke one for a TD or sacked the QB 5 times in a row. But, what about the 40-50 other plays ? Like I said before, yes its vital to have a recruiting profile and go to combines, but the pudding is in the films of each and every game and play. I see several boys being recruited next year. Also to have 3 of our players mentioned is a big honor and shows you how hard they work and how good our coaches are. Keep up the good work boys and you will go far !

I agree with everything you said...just frustrated some our our kids don't get any D1 looks. I forgot to mention it before, but gratz to everyone.

For decades our athletes have not recieved D1 scholarships for a couple of reasons.

1. We think we are better than we are.
2. Our kids play to their top potenial and well togeather as a team.
3. As an example look at Harmon and Tatum at LU - on the bench, Doty with 0, Lumpy at a JC, on and on.
I thought it was Burnett not pushing for it but the same is continuing with Fairclothe. Hooks, Neauman seem to have connections that allow their kids to go to the next level why we don't I do not know.

Well Coach Faircloth has only been here 2 years so you can't put much stock in that just yet. That said, Doty appears to be going to Oregon...even if it is a preferred walk-on, that's saying something regardless if he is on the bench or not (which I expect to him to be fore alteast 1-2 yrs). I think he has the tools to be great in college if given a chance...I guess time will tell if impresses the HC enough.

Merka received a scholorship from TCU..I'm not just drinking png kool-aid here...he is not better than Doty. I really think alot of it has to do with these combines and what kind of physical talent you have off the football field. If you have awesome times, strength etc, I feel a college (nfl) believes they can mold you into a good player.

Merka was 6'4" 200 lbs and ran a sub 4.7 as a Sophomore. That's what got him his shot at TCU. I understand how TCU could feel like he is worth a shot since if he doesn't pan out as a QB (and for the record I don't think he will) they figure he can play TE, LB or DE with his size speed combo. Doty, who is a much better QB, on the other hand will only be a QB.

I don't think TCU has any intention of Merka being a qb. I could see them turning him into a DE, like Schoebel from Columbus. Both times we played Crosby, he did not impress me with he qb skills. You can't pin not sending kids to big time D1on Burnett or Faircloth. Those type of kids are rare and you know one when you see one usually. The complaint against Burnett was that he didn't help kids get scholarships at JC's and smaller schools. Faircloth and company helped 2 kids get JC scholarships and one D2. The only kid Neumann has sent to big time D1 is Dravanti Johnson and he has not panned out at ut. Surely, you don't think Hooks"connections" got Chris Cole, Kevin Smith, Earl Thomas etc D1 rides. Those type players pick and choose where they go. We just don't see that level of talent at PNG very often. Dustin Long was that kind of player. Too bad he got such a raw deal at A&M. Last year when everyone was belly aching about" wasting all the talent we have on defense" I posted that everyone should wait and see how many got offered by D1 schools. I am not knocking our kids, just making the point that D1 kids don't come our way very often. I think Nelson is the only one we have coming up that has a shot at D1, but I do think there are a few that could play at the lower levels. Having said all that, to get a scholarship at any level is quite an accomplishment and puts these kids in pretty rare territory.

D1 (FBS) football scholarships are rare. Remember there are over twice as many D1 schools playing baseball and basketball then football.

On average about 6 to 8 kids from the GT area get D1 schollies each year. So out of 200+ GT Seniors each year 8 may get D1 scholarships. Of those 8 only 2 to 4 will be FBS. We all know that the talent at WOS, PAM and WB is greater at the top then it is at PNG or Nederland so if each of those three schools gets one of those 4 FBS schollies that leaves 1 maybe 2 for the rest. Simple fact. If the kids can play at the next level it wll not go un-noticed!
