On another sad note for PN-G football, I read in the PA News obituaries (online edition for March 24, 2010), that Howard Kern, age 50, passed away. I believe this may be the same Howard Kern that was an all-district and all-state OL for the 1977 PN-G Indian team that went 14-1 advancing to the 4A State Championship game against the Plano Wildcats. The obituary did not mention that Howard was an all-state OL for the Indians, but it did mention that he was a graduate of PN-G HS and an avid follower of PN-G football. Thoughts and prayers to the Kern family. Once an Indian ... Always an Indian.

I don't know about the rest of you that visit the PNGINDIANS website and this message board, but I am tired of reading about the passing of Indians. We've had enough losses of good Indians. We've lost Mr. LeBoeuf, Mr. Esquivel, Coach Helduser, and now Mr. Kern. The younger generations of PN-G Indians have much to uphold ... the older generations of Indians have set some high standards ... the bar is set pretty high.

Go Indians. Peace.

Howard Kern was the quintessential PN-G Indian. Quick, aggressive and tough as nails as he and fellow lineman Jeff Cooley and others set THE standard for Indian lineman to follow. Those guys were at the heart of the great teams in the mid-70s as they cleared the way for Richy Ethridge, James Shipley, Justin Eicher, David Fry, Blake Green and other excellent skill players on those teams.

Hearing of a fellow alumnus passing away at such a young age reinforces to all that life is fleeting and precious. Condolences to his family.

Howard was a good friend of mine. I attended the service and visitation for Howard. He will diffidently be missed by all who knew him. When future PNG Indian generations look at the trophies that was won during the late 70's, Howard is one of many on those winning teams you can thank. He was a proud Indian to the end. R.I.P. Hoot!!! :'(

I feel so old!! :eek:ld: We personally were close to every one of these recent losses. Hubby knew Gordon LeBoeuf from high school, Roy Esquivel actually played baseball on hubby's team, Jim Bob played baseball in same league and we watched him win for games for PNG, and Howard Kern played football with our son and dated our daughter. Howard spent many hours at our house, and so did Raymond Murphy and Terry Guilbeaux (both of whom died young of heart attacks). All this hurts me so much and makes me so very sad.

PN-G INDIANS FOOTBALL

I could not be more proud of our team and our community. The spirit here is unmatched! I am so lucky to be a part of it and to wear the purple and white! The journey of this football season, with these coaches and our players, will stay with me forever.  -- PN-G Head Coach Jeff Joseph
