Dragons fall in 12 OT to Jacksonville, 84-81

The Nacogdoches Dragons and Jacksonville Indians started Friday’s District 14-4A game playing for a playoff berth.

As it turned out, they played long into the night and set what is thought to be a national record for overtimes.

Jacksonville’s Rodrigo Carreon hit a 19-yard field goal in the bottom of the 12th overtime to give the Indians an 84-81 victory over the Dragons Friday night on Dragon Stadium.

The Dragons had scored 53 points in overtime, but in the 12th overtime, they fumbled — their fifth lost fumble and 11th turnover of the game. The Indians capitalized with the field goal to end a game that lasted more than five hours.

The Dragons had several opportunities to win the game in the overtimes, but intentionally extended the game due to playoff scenarios. If everything played out, it was possible for a three-way tie after next week’s game that need Nacogdoches to win by at least 7 points to reach the playoffs over Jacksonville, due to tiebreaker.

There was unofficially more than 1,000 total yards amassed in the game.

Nacogdoches Damion Johnson rushed for 264 yards and three touchdowns.

Jacksonville led 28-14 at halftime, but a 2-yard run by Jacob Howard and a 17-yard pass from Howard to Michael Dove in the fourth quarter tied the game to begin the overtime frenzy.

There was also approximately 60 combined first downs between the two teams.

The Dragons will end the season next Friday in Hallsville. Nacogdoches (3-6, 2-4) was officially eliminated from the playoffs with the loss.
