Food for thought that we can all use.

How Will You Be Remembered?
A good life can be its own reward
Feb 24, 2010 | WRITTEN BY Chris Russell

You probably haven't heard of Mary MacKillop, so we'll fill you in.

She was born in 1842 and became a nun in Australia's Roman Catholic Church. She founded the sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, which built dozens of schools in the Australian Outback, as well as orphanages and clinics. She was excommunicated from the church for challenging the orthodox thinking of the time, was eventually exonerated, and will be declared a saint at a ceremony in Rome on October 17.

Quite a resume, isn't it?

Did you see anything in that description that mentioned her being a wealthy landowner? Or having maids at her beck and call? Or having the most expensive wardrobe or latest gadgets of her time? Of course not. No one cares about what she had because they are too busy remembering what she did. She served others well and made people's lives better.

She knew which things in life were most important and focused on them. That's the lesson for today. Know which things in life are truly important. Would you rather spend time with your family or buy a car so expensive that you'll have to get an extra job to pay for it? That homeless shelter at the other end of town could probably use some help. Find what you can help with near home, and do some helping.

When you make the big check-out, you can't take anything with you. Might as well leave something good behind. Make that "something" your life story. Your house can be sold. The car will eventually hit the junk yard. Your story sticks around.
