Lazarus May of Memorial led five other Jefferson County honorees on the list of the Texas Sports Writers Association’s 5A all-state football team, released Friday.

May was named second-team all-state defensive lineman, adding to his awards as District 9-5A Division I and The News’ Super Team defensive player of the year. May had 12 sacks and 29 tackles for losses out of 59 total tackles, made 11 quarterback pressures, forced three fumbles and scored a safety and a touchdown.

The other five local all-state honorees are all from Port Neches-Groves. Quarterback Roschon Johnson, fullback Cooper Hammond, defensive lineman John Nichols and defensive backs Tyler Jackson and Kade Martin each were named honorable mention.

Johnson was the District 12-5A Division II and The News’ Super Team MVP after totaling 2,338 passing and 1,619 rushing yards and 49 combined touchdowns. He is enrolled at the University of Texas.

Hammond caught 23 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns. Nichols made nine sacks and 59 total tackles. Jackson intercepted three passes and finished with 90 tackles. Martin had four picks and 82 tackles.

They all deserve it. But MAN I was super impressed with Nichols this year. He brought a “meanness” that we needed big time. Sometimes players mistake trash talking, gloating and taunting for a sportsmanlike mean. All winning teams have at least one or two really “mean” players. Closest player I knew a little bit like that was LaMichael James played at Texarkana Liberty Eylau when they won state in 2006 (they also had Will Middlebrooks who played 3rd for the Red Sox) imagine LaMichael J at RB and Middlebrooks at QB. They had other super athletes as well. Played RB at Oregon and for the 49ers then had a meltdown somewhere I hear. But he was MEAN. as a RB.

Nichols was overlooked for the all-district teams. So this is really great tribute for him. He was the best defensive player on the field for PN-G and deserved it.

And he demonstrated the meanness and tenacity that a good offensive lineman has. Nichols started on the o-line as a soph and junior. People sometimes forget that an o-lineman is hitting someone on every play.
