La Marque releases names of AD applicants

LA MARQUE — Nederland head coach Larry Neumann and former Santa Fe head coach Joe Krauskopf are among 34 applicants for the vacant athletic director and head football coach job at La Marque High School, according to a list sent by La Marque ISD on Saturday.

Neumann has been the head coach at a pretty stout Nederland program for 15 years.

Krauskopf, currently an assistant at Ball High, compiled a 38-53-2 record in his eight seasons as the Indians’ head coach. He led Santa Fe to its first two playoff appearances, in 2002 and 2005.

Bill Barron (Elsik), Lionell Crawford (Smiley), Mike Jackson (Chavez), Gary Mullins (Grapevine) and David Suggs (Nimitz) — all head football coaches at their respective schools — also applied.

Former La Marque football assistant coaches Phillip Mattingly (Port Arthur Memorial) and Carnell White (Nimitz) have tossed their names into the hat as well.

Former O’Connell head football coach Dimitri Gazelas also has applied for the job, along with Dickinson assistant Earl Ricicar, Ball High assistant Kenneth Foster and La Marque assistants Elliott Johnson and Earnest Lynch.

Former La Marque players Jonathan Cooper, a Ball High assistant, and Ryan Silvertooth, an assistant at Pearland Dawson, also have applied for the job.

La Marque is searching for a new athletic director and head football coach after Chris Jones resigned from those positions Feb. 15. He was hired by the school district on March 8, 2007, after an extensive search.

The Daily News filed a request Wednesday for the names of the applicants for the current vacancy, as well as the names of those on the hiring committee for the search.

That is a tempting opportunity for a motivated head coach. If he wants to win a state championship he'll need to make a move like that.

And I suppose it's a bit more lucrative too, otherwise, his name wouldn't be in the hat.

IndianFan, just curious, do you think Burnett has a shot at another State Championship before hanging em up? Just curious, thanks in advance.

Never say never but more than likely not. It's a huge accomplishment for any school to reach or win the state championship game. And PN-G has had more success in reaching that level over the years but I think either MC team will have a tough time winning state. IMO the best PNG team since '99 was the '03 team that lost to Waller by a point or two.

I've seen C4L on the board recently (since this post started). He hasn't replied. I wonder what he knows.

He knows that Lamarque better do whatever they can to get this guy running their program, that's what he knows. He may know more, but I know he knows that.

Agreed, and I think if not for some bad calls in the game that they would have won another game or two that year.

The offensive line and running game was a powerhouse in '03 and the defense was stout. If a PNG team like that can't make it to the finals it's going to be a tough row to hoe.

But that's just my opinion.

The Indians had a great team in '99, much more than just Dustin Long, and also benefited from some good coaching to get to the finals. So given a very good PNG and Nederland squad in the playoffs, I'd bet on the Indians going further. They just seem to have something extra.

No doubt it would be heartbreak over here... but more for the man we lose than the football coach. Neumann has built an attitude at Nederland. He's made our kids know that they should beat you boys every year because they are tougher than you. I'm not here to poke or prod, you boys have owned us over the past half century and should be commended as the top programs in the state, I'm well aware. But Neumann has brought a nasty that only guys like Dustin Long can beat... when you are just WAY BETTER than us. All things equal, the guy just gets his kids to play sick/nasty football and win. What he has brought to Nederland will last long after he has gone. He has been a part of our community, not just our football team. He has laughed with us, joked with us, cried with us... he has been a part of us, and his influence will linger and soak long after he is gone. All great and wonderful things must come to an end. If this is the end, I wish the man well, noone knows just how classy this man was.

Hiya Proud...nice to see ya again. Hope all is well with you. I really like your new board..very well done.

I've talked to several folks this morning about what's going on with Coach Neumann...and I can't get a straight answer. I understand he interviews with LaMarque sometime this week. You guys will probably know before we do. All we can do is wish him the best in whatever path he chooses and thank him for his years as the AD/Coach here.

Neumann is finalist at La Marque

By Tom Halliburton
The Port Arthur News

The Port Arthur News has learned Nederland athletic coordinator/head football coach Larry Neumann is included in a list of four finalists for La Marque's vacant identical position.

Multiple sources within a consulting firm contracted by the La Marque ISD have confirmed that Neumann is expected to be interviewed at some point this week, along with three other finalists, by La Marque schools superintendent Ecomet Burley.

The News contacted Burley's office on Tuesday afternoon, but was not permitted to speak to Burley. The 53-year-old Burley did not return a phone call.

Neumann declined comment to The News on his status for the La Marque position, other than to say that he has not been interviewed at this point by Burley or any La Marque ISD administration official.

Port Arthur Memorial assistant football coach and head girls soccer coach Phil Mattingly also indicated on Tuesday afternoon that he had not been contacted by any La Marque ISD officials, either.

Neumann and Mattingly were two of 34 names released by La Marque's ISD as applicants for the head coaching position which was vacated more than a month ago by Chris Jones, who was hired a year ago after a successful stint at 2A Refugio.

One of the state's annual perennial football powers, La Marque went 9-3 in Jones' one head coaching season, losing to Lumberton 24-21 in the area 4A playoff round. The Cougars also lost to next-door district neighbors Texas City and Dickinson.

At least four individuals have been involved with screening applicants for a consulting firm contracted by the La Marque ISD last month. Members of that firm have indicated that La Marque planned to hire its new head football coach on or before April 10.

One of the state's true high school football meccas, La Marque annually has a number of major college signees from its program. The Cougars have won five state football championships in the past 12 seasons.

It is expected that Neumann, 56, would certainly command a six-figure salary and probably would receive at least a 25 percent salary increase if he would be hired by La Marque. Neumann's base salary at Nederland is $78,000.

Nederland was a frequent La Marque rival while Bryan Erwin served as head coach for five seasons, compiling a 65-8 record, which included 4A Division II state championships in 2003 and 2006. Erwin resigned a year ago from a $92,401 annual salary at La Marque to accept a more lucrative multi-year, six-figure deal at the wealthy north Dallas suburb of Flower Mound.

Neumann confirmed to The News that he would meet with consulting firm members last week. He indicated on Tuesday that he believed his interview with the firm had gone very well last Thursday.

The LM job probably comes with a six figure income. Tough to turn that down not to mention the tools to build a state championship team.

If he can motivate and manage the LM players as he's done in Nederland there will be a lot of serious runs at the title.
