Last night, I was finally able to see the Indians in action! Here are a few of my observations:
CROWD: Very large PN-G crowd. Arrived at 5:30 and was hard pressed to find a good seat!
Found a great spot near the band. For the most part, everyone around where I was sitting was into the game. Everyone stood for Cherokee each time it was played and also stood up to cheer the Indians for each 3rd down play (whether we were on offense or defense). It was hard to gauge if our side of the crowd was in fact as loud as I expected, but overall our side was packed!
BAND: I witnessed first hand the "swinging of the instruments" when Cherokee was played. I do agree with some previous posters that think this does diminish the sound and intrigue of the song. I'm not sure when this "tradition" started, but I think a more powerful sound would be obtained without the swinging back and forth. During the Marching I when the band starts by facing the crowd, it was loud, bold and sent chills up my spine. THAT is how I remember Cherokee sounding. I also noticed the band playing nothing other than Cherokee, Tomahawk Chop, school song and the hymn that accompanied the opening welcome during the first three quarters. I think I finally started hearing some songs during the 4th quarter. I do admire all these young men and women. The work that goes into learning how to play an instrument (especially in the cold brisk air) is amazing. I enjoyed the halftime and think that the kids were having a good time (which is really all that matters).
THE GAME: Great show of heart shown by all the young men on the field. As in all of the games this year...these boys NEVER GAVE UP. Many teams would have folded in the 3rd quarter, but not our boys! Great show of determination and pride!
I was a little disturbed by the blatant personal fouls by Manvel. There were many head butts after the whistle (some were called and some were not) as well as some taunting by many of their players (and fans). I understand that these are kids and sometime the atmosphere may get the best of you, I was just hoping it would not get as ugly as it did at times last night.
I am proud of all the young men and women who participated in all aspects of the game last night. I think we showed an up and coming school all about tradition, pride and fan support. Although we did not come out on the winning side of the ballgame...I think we won in many "other areas" of this night.
