I have an idea that I think programs should adopt. Some may poo poo this idea but I say if one positive comes out of it then why not. I say implement —-TWO football programs. Say Advanced Football Studies. For serious football players. Then a “weekend warrior†program. Who has a seperate coach and made their own practice schedule/ routine. Like this. Say you have a 6’10 sophomore who plays basketball like a dream and has a band scholarship to Stanford. plays concert saxophone etc and wants to play in the band. But this kid doesn’t want to give his “all†to football. So you have that kid do the second program. So he’s full on the team (optional) on Friday nights. But also plays in the band etc. But when you need him for a two point conversion WR toss up. He comes in. Gets the “rebound†for the TD or 2pt try, goes back and straps on the sax for halftime. The second coach could put together “teams†if you put together a fabulous punt team for instance. And that’s ALL they do. They could practice less than the advanced team. Etc. basically the athletes you miss out on because they don’t want to give 100% to football but could contribute in some way. They don’t expect to play even sometimes. But they’re there if needed for some specialized skill etc. for instance. I saw several baseball players that I thought to myself “man we’re missing out on a 5 play WR/flanker in that shortstop etc. this if fully implementable and I see no down side. Even if you get one kid’s contributions. The second team may or May not be included to any degree. In my ultimate projectionof what a cool concept would/could be is the Special Forces†or “kamikaze team†day they could work on specialty trick plays. They get one or two down to perfection and quick strike “trickyâ€plays. Like the Pleasant Grove first play of The champ game. Etc. basically anything you had the personnel for. (Not saying you would always field 11+ But that’d be berter. They’d be a psychological weapon on the other team the man varsity team any problems could be solved on a cross that bridge when we get to it basis. Basically develop football talent that don’t want to do “two a days†or MAYBE they’re the type that might train on their own to their caliber of excellence. Like I saw two powerlifters theee at PNG that could have DEFINITELY been used as an auxiliary NG maybe they left the program in JR high over a misunderstanding with a coach or another player and quit football forever. Let the second coach have him he doesn’t have to associate with his feuding neighbor 6 days a week and ride on the same bus. The two teams come to the agreement of ettiquite (how much the two teams interact socially/tribally and even if the varsity team voted on not using the auxiliary team they could have a vote. (Even weighted coach vote) the Marines came from the Navy and I’ve always heard they don’t get along sometimes on boats. So like the army and navy even. Same team different ideas of how to “run things†internally. If the second team starts doing things the first team can’t do etc. even a “pirate†squad. Runs an offense like Vidor to perfection (5-10-20 plays in repertoire but uses confusion/counter instead of typical size. You don’t have to have as big of an OL in that offense because it uses Martial arts thinking gets you leaning one way and Bam you’re out a 43 yard run. And don’t misunderstand me saying they don’t have to be best friends (the opposite would be optimum) mutual earned respect. This dynamic subjectively is already in place some kids give more. Even if they spend the same clock hours. The HC would ultimately be the dictator on the field. But who wouldn’t want 11 players trained for a purpose that were a self governing body. (Free truck play or two per game) the HC could say “whachall got for goal line? Come up with something show it to me against our #1 Defense and if it works we might try it in the game. What SS wouldn’t want to be the QB for ONE hook& LATERAL play. See one problem on trick plays is that the regular offense has to perform them. When the play is called it shocks them and affects their performance of said play. One thought is that if the kamikaze team knew they’d do one or more trick play and that’s all they had to think about I promise that play would be more effective. One play builds on another. That worked last week let’s add this wrinkle for the scout team. Now you’ve got two plays. I mean what if you gained THREE separate offensive teams each 11 or combination (best man up) only concerned about the what not the HOW. the second coach disciplines and assigns tasks as he sees fit. He’s delivering a product to he HC. I know people might say that already happens with assistants. Not the same. I guess that’s all I have time to explain. All negatives are conquered with common sense. It’s how every system is built common sense. IOW for every problem a system like this brings up there is always a common sense solution. Just my 2. My football brain was turned on and I figure not going to be talking about anything else right now.
