Football: Plano Senior names Ryan Cox as new defensive coordinator

Plano Senior's defense will be under new leadership next season after the program announced the promotion of assistant head coach and linebackers coach Ryan Cox to defensive coordinator.

With the 2017 high school football season is two-and-a-half months away, Plano Senior has had an impromptu shake-up at defensive coordinator.

Plano head coach Jaydon McCullough has named Ryan Cox as the Wildcats' new defensive coordinator. Cox takes over for Brent Graham, who recently accepted a position at Arizona State University.

Cox was Plano's assistant head coach and linebackers coach last season -- his first with the program after a two-year stint as head coach at Lovejoy.

“Coach Cox is very confident and knowledgeable,” McCullough said. “He’s a high-energy coach … who is loyal, a good guy and a very good football coach.”

Cox has more than a decade of in-state coaching experience under his belt, including stops at Northern State University (South Dakota) and Texas A&M-Commerce, Commerce, Terrell and Port Neches-Grove. He served as Lovejoy's defensive coordinator before being promoted to head coach in 2014.

He'll take the reins of a Plano defense that surrendered 25.6 points per game last season and finished No. 11 in total yards allowed in the Class 6A Metroplex and within the top 20 in both passing defense and rushing defense.

The Wildcats begin their 2017 season Sept. 1 against Hebron.

Why do major newspaper outlets, e.g., Houston Chronicle, Fort Worth Star, and Dallas Morning News, consistently get PN-G wrong. Simple research shows it is Port Neches - Groves, and not Port Neches Grove. I know it sounds petty, but you would think that a newspaper would get the name of PN-G correct. The Indians have been deep in the football playoffs and they are the reigning Class 5A State Champions in baseball.

Go Indians. Peace.
