Playoff history...

I heard on the news last night that PNG has NEVER won a playoff game in Basketball! Is this true? I know that when the 89 team went to the playoffs it had been since the fifties that PNG had a team in the playoffs. That team in the fifties was one and done?

If this is true, what a great opportunity lies before this team! I know they are working hard every day and would like nothing more than to make a little more PNG history! I think this group can get it done!

I know the more support we can muster up for the team, the better their chances! Let's get some folks in the stands to support the 2011 Indians! I can guarantee you the team notices!

I'll have to check but I think that a team that had Phil Vagera and Jerry Sterling and was coached by Cecil Green may have in the mid 60's.

I know Coach Vagrea at Basketball Basics will know for sure.

We had a couple of good teams in the early and mid 70's, David Mire, David Allen, Aguilards, Wainwrights, Charlie Huff etc... but then only 1 team went - always Lincoln Bumbblebees

I know a couple of players on this team, we will be at the games and I hope others do to. We need as much enthusiasim as we show to the Football and Baseball playoff teams.

THESE GUYS DESERVE IT!!!

When we advanced in 1989 we had to beat Bridge City (Shane Dronett and Jason Matthews) in a 1-game, winner-take-all play-in game. We beat Bridge City at Thomas Jefferson High School and advanced to play Galena Park in the first round of the playoffs. The G-P Yellow Jackets beat us 88-80 at Barbers Hill Gymnasium in the first round. PN-G was led by Head Coach Don Bryson. We had an excellent shooter/player at the SG/SF spot named Bobby Straface. If he got hot, he could fill-up the bucket from anywhere on the court ... he could drive, finish, shoot from way downtown, and just flat out score when we needed him to. 6'9" Michael Jeter patrolled the middle. Jeter could swat some shots and he made people think twice about going to the rim. Plus, he could rebound and drop the ball in the hole. Frosh Joel LaFleur held down one guard spot and Jon Jones controlled the dribble and tempo of the game for us. Erik Vegara also played guard and controlled the tempo of a game. In 1989, 2 teams made the playoffs...Port Arthur Lincoln and PN-G. Lincoln went on to win state in 1989 with PG BJ Tyler, C Stephen Jackson, a host of role players that came in 5 at time...and the Bees were led by Head Coach Joe Price.

Before 1989, the prior PN-G team to make the playoffs was a team from the mid to late 1960s ... maybe, 1966, 1967, or 1968.

Coach Bryson had some good teams with great players in the 1970s and 1980s...Monte Wainwright, the Westbrook boys, etc. But, up until the late 1980s, only 1 team made the playoffs and it was Port Arthur Lincoln. If multiple teams made the playoffs during the 1970s and early 1980s, PN-G's playoff history would look different. Lots of good teams and great players sat home while Lincoln marched to the state tourney.

The fact is our history is what our history is. And if the truth be told, Our other sports history (even football) would look much different if multiple teams went back then. This group has done what only two others before them have done, please don't "play it down" as it is a huge accomplishment at a school where football is king.

I agree...huge accomplishment...not meant to downplay what the 2010-2011 Indians accomplished...meant more in the direction of PN-G's basketball history is not as bad as some would believe. We've had some good teams and very good players over the years. One year...early 1980s, I believe...the Indians went something like 25-5 or 25-7 and MISSED the playoffs because Lincoln and BC-P were roaring through Southeast Texas. Lots of good basketball history at PN-G. Here's to the 2010-2011 Indians writing more history with a playoff win. I hope they get red hot and win more than just 1 playoff game. Go have fun, play hard, and put a few playoff wins in the record books. Good stuff to be enjoyed by all.

Go Indians. Peace.
