Top 35 Defensive teams during the 'modern' era of PN-G football. (Last 5 decades).
The 2019 team ranks 34th of 95 teams. Offensive schemes and strategies that defenses faced prior to the 1980's and more so 90's and beyond should be considered.

1975 - 1977, PN-G whipped people on offense and defense. The strength of Coach Ethridge's teams: Defense, limited TOs and mistakes, and controlling the ball. The 1974-1977 teams are in the top-6 defenses. No surprise. This is great information!

‘99 data is skewed - there were several games where the starters were pulled midway through the 3rd or the start of the 4th quarter. You may could say that for several of the teams on this list, but I may be a little biased.

True. That would apply to a lot of the better teams including the 70s.

How is the 1972 PN-G team not more highly regarded? Port Arthur Lincoln must have been a great team to grab the one and only playoff spot from the district in 1972. Was Little Joe Washington still at Lincoln in 1972? Or, was it just his little brother Ken Washington? The 1972 Indians played 10 games and gave up a total of 92 points. Meanwhile, the PN-G offense had a total of 339 points. The 1972 PN-G team was a monster!

Go Indians. Peace.

That team was indeed good and ranked in the top 10 all year. ‘72 was Jeff Bergeron’s senior year. He gained 1465 yards rushing in 10 games that season. Unfortunately Kenny Washington had a better game in their matchup and led the 5th ranked Bees to a win over the #3 ranked Indians and a district championship in a time when only the district championship made the playoffs.

Joe Washington's last season was 1971.

The often celebrated glory years of PN-G football featured consistent defensive play. The 70s was an era when fewer points were scored by offenses, but the hard nosed, disciplined defense that these four PN-G teams fielded was impressive. Overall record was 52-6 during this period.

1974 - 131 points allowed (9.36 ppg), 4 shutouts
1975 -115 points allowed (7.67 ppg), 4 shutouts
1976 - 109 points allowed (7.79 ppg), 3 shutouts
1977 - 119 points allowed (7.93 ppg), 4 shutouts
