LITTLE CYPRESS - The Port Neches-Groves Indians stuck to their bread and butter on offense Tuesday night and it worked to almost perfection.

The plan was obvious to stick to the running game and wear down the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears.

PN-G (3-0, 1-0) trounced LC-M’s (0-2, 0-1) defense for 323 yards on the ground en route to a 34-7 victory to open the District 20-4A schedule for both teams.

Josh Wright was the workhorse for the Indians on this night as the senior bruised his way for 155 yards on 20 carries with three scores.

LC-M was outgained 412-145 in the game. PN-G also led with 23 first downs compared to just nine for the Bears.

While the Indians offense was steam rolling, the defense was punishing especially in the first half.

The Bears

Blake Perry led the Bears with 29 yards on six carries and sophomore quarterback Hunter Gonzales continued to show potential.

Gonzales was 9-for-18 passing for 50 yards with no interceptions. The Bears lone score came in the fourth quarter on a halfback option as Chad Humphrey hooked up with Samuel Burton in the back of end zone to seal the final score.

PN-G only scored once in the entire second half after putting up 28 points in the first two frames.

The second half score came with 7:59 left in the game as Jareb Logan found paydirt from 1-yard out. It was the Indians next to last drive of the night and PN-G did a great job running down the clock.

The scoring drive started on the PN-G 23 yard line and took nine plays to finish.

PN-G quarterback Harrison Tatum continued to show a great arm in his final season with the Indians as he was 5-for-9 for 89 yards and no interceptions.

Spencer DeRon hauled in two receptions for 58 yards and Kyler Segura had 25 yards on two catches.

The first half was all Indians as the rushing attack was the main focus of the PN-G attack. LC-M could only manage one first down, on penalties, while PN-G picked oup 14 in the first half.

Great job by the entire team! I saw MANY players getting the crowd excited... #66 Dylan Girolamo, # 67 Dillon Harrison, # 47 Kyle Dover, and # 69 Blake Patin were raising their arms and cheering with the crowd! ( as well as others that I cannot remember!) It was very exciting to see the boys so pumped up!

We all know that the offense did well, but let's give a shout-out to the defense. Sometimes they are overlooked because they aren't scoring points, but they REALLY looked great last night.

SCALP 'EM INDIANS----- Let's go to the dog pound on Saturday and repeat last night's performance!!!

Port Neches-Groves trounces Little Cypress-Mauriceville
By PERRYN KEYS
October, 1, 2008

ORANGE — It wasn’t close.

Josh Wright ran for 171 yards and three touchdowns, and Port Neches-Groves piled up 426 yards from scrimmage as the Indians opened District 20-4A play with a 34-7 victory over Little Cypress-Mauriceville in Battlin’ Bear Stadium Tuesday night.

It was a rare school-night showdown and the first game for both teams in 24 days. It was also the home opener for LC-M, which suffered a 48-7 loss in its only previous game against West Orange-Stark on Sept. 6.

Two weeks’ worth of games had been canceled in the meantime, compliments of Hurricane Ike.

Tuesday’s game was also a stark contrast from PN-G’s last visit to Battlin’ Bear Stadium in 2006; that year, LC-M shocked the Indians, rolling up a 42-0 victory that ultimately kept PN-G out of the Class 4A playoffs.

This time, there was no upset. In fact, when Wright pounded out his third touchdown with 7 seconds remaining in the first half — giving the Indians a 28-0 lead — it was clear LC-M would have needed a miraculous second half to catch up.

To be sure, the Bears (0-2, 0-1) showed more signs of life after halftime; they even scored the final touchdown of the night when tailback Chad Humphrey rolled left on a halfback option, stepped back and threw to Samuel Burton for a 15-yard touchdown.

By then, however, it was too little, too late.

On offense, the Bears had little to offer in the first half. They managed 21 yards from scrimmage and one first down — and that lone first down came off a PN-G penalty.

The highlight, in fact, may have come from Hunter Gonzales, who unleashed a 62-yard punt after the Bears’ first possession in the first quarter.

Of course, the Indians weren’t bothered by it. Senior quarterback Harrison Tatum found receiver Spencer DeRon for a 47-yard touchdown, giving PN-G (3-0, 1-0) a quick 14-0 lead.

The Indians scored on their first three possessions and went ahead 28-0 on Wright’s touchdown just before halftime.

Turnovers and penalties slowed both teams during the third quarter, but when PN-G took over in the final period, backup rusher Jareb Logan removed all doubt, scoring on a 1-yard run that put the Indians ahead 34-0.

Tatum completed 5 of 9 passes for 88 yards and a touchdown as PN-G was content to pound the Bears in the trenches.

The Indians finished with 338 rushing yards.
