Yeah, im not sure why it is so taboo to play both ways on PNG. I've seen many other teams do it. It seems like we need to have a whole different philosophy, wipe the slate clean, start over.Never too late to improve. Hoping that the defense can find the key.
It would be great to see a couple of offensive players play some defense. I think Burt would be an incredible defensive tackle. He knows how to play with leverage and being an offensive lineman, understands how to play a block. And most importantly he has the upper body/arm strength to hold off blockers and toss them aside when he finds the ball. I’m guessing he’s the strongest player on the team based on field results.
Going back to 4 down linemen with a player like Burt in there would change the defensive dynamics. As it is now the noseguard is being double teamed and blown off the ball, as are the ends, and the linebackers are not able to consistently make the tackles once a back gets going. A good offensive line such as BH is doubling the down lineman and then also blocking the linebacker off of that block and pulling from the backside to lead the play. A back is going to get 5-10++ yards every play at this rate. Got to find a difference maker on that defensive line.
And crash course on tackling drills.
Thoughts about trying things like getting some help on defense to balance the team strengths?
I believe Briles intercepted 2 passes. He was the best player on the field.Spread offenses have changed how HS teams defend the quick passing game. No one likes ball carriers running wild on the perimeter or in open space. I get that. That said, I am not a fan of the 3-4 defense in high school. It works in college and NFL because you can recruit or draft 3 massive DL to tie up blockers. In HS, you have to play with the talent at your school. I'd rather rush 4 DL and bring an occasional blitz to hurry the QB. Having 3 DL in the high school trenches gives up too many rushing yards and it rarely stops a good QB or RB from getting to the second or third levels. Running QBs and nederland's RB ran up and down the field because the Indians do not have enough kids at the point of attack. BH had 5 OL and a lead blocker pave the way for the slowest QB on PN-G's schedule and he ran for 225 yards. That is not the fault of the kids playing defense. They play hard. There is just not enough defenders around the ball. As an armchair, helicopter, and opinionated alum, I say give something else a try. Maybe 4-3 or 4-2-5. I'm all for defending against the deep ball and not getting beat deep on a bomb. I am all for keeping defenders on the perimeter to limit big plays in open space. However, I don't want the slowest QB in the district running for 225 yards. Put our kids in position to make stops. Our kids are coachable and they will do what they are supposed to so IF they are put in the right spots. They will run through brick walls if given the chance. If we can get a lot of Indians around the football, one or two of them will make a big hit and get the ball carrier on the ground. If we need to play kids both way, then do it. They are 15-18 year old kids. They are resilient. They will not fatigue or run out of gas like a 90-year old nursing home resident with emphysema. Play the best 11 kids in all three phases of the game. I can still remember in the 1999 state championship game Stephenville had Kendall Briles playing both ways at QB and FS. He was the engine that made that Stephenville team go and Art Briles had him playing both ways. Just my 0.02 cents. I know...I know...I'm not a coach. I don't pretend to be one. I just want the Indians to win. I'm one of those fans that think PN-G should always win, 100-0, and when they don't, I think, we just ran out of time. I wear purple shades, I know that. I support the coaches and kids 100%. Stepping down and off the soap box, now.
Go Indians. Peace.
