Street naming sets up Bum to attend Mid County Madness
Bob West

PORT ARTHUR — The stars are in perfect alignment for a very special tie-in with Bum Phillips to this year’s chapter of Mid County Madness. Bum is coming to Southeast Texas Sept. 29 -- his 88th birthday — in conjunction with a street naming in his honor in Nederland and Port Neches. Larry Neumann’s Bulldogs and Brandon Faircloth’s Indians get it on the following night, with Fox Sports Southwest in town to do its statewide pre-game show from outside Indian Stadium and the Port Arthur News Friday Night Experience following up with the game telecast that will air on Fox 4 at 11 p.m. With a little arm twisting from his favorite sports editor, Bum has agreed to stay over for the football game, do an interview on his Nederland and PN-G memories with Fox Sports Southwest and be a halftime guest on the game telecast. He says it will be the first schoolboy football game he’s seen in years. His lone request was that he and wife Debbie be seated for the game in a spot that is totally neutral. Our TV booth will serve that role. What I’m hoping is that PN-G officials — it’s their home game — will consider having Bum taken to midfield for the pre-game coin toss, where he can shake hands with the referees and team captains, and be accorded a mind-blowing standing ovation for all he’s meant to this area for so many years. I’m also working on getting Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips over from Houston to be part of the occasion.

Actually sitting in the booth with West is NOT the most neutral place in the stadium.

Sitting in the VIP section of the press box is where he should be. To keep it neutral, invite some folks from Nederland and PN-G to sit with him. Bum Phillips doesn't need to be chaperoned by Bob West.

Those of us going to school in the 70s remember how he despised us. When Ethridge left TJ before the season started he blew a gasket! AND WE HAD 2 OR 3 SEMI FINALS - A STATE FINAL AND WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 75!!!!

Correct me if I am wrong, did TJ WIN a state championship game in the 70's -80's??

It makes me nauseous when he talks about Todd Dodge.

They had great teams - bottom line the accomplished way way less the Ethridge teams of 74-78 (5 years running)

Burt Darden had our beat then.

Bob West has no buisness at a Nederland / PNG event.

My opinion and it will never change.

Sorry I got so excited!!!!!!!!!!!

I think its Nederland and Port Neches Aves. At one time it was going to be 365, but Port Arthur would not agree with it.
