This was the 1984 Indian Band playing Cherokee after learning they advanced to the State Marching Contest.

You can definitely tell a tempo difference. It is played much sloooower now. :(

Someone needs to copy and send this to the current Band Director with a note, "there are some traditions that do not need to be changed!" :band:

Whoa! I am one of those dudes playing trumpet there...kinda sloppy but we were excited about progressing.

At the end of the clip you notice a group of kids that run over and start cheering with us, that was the LC-M band that had also just found out that they were also advancing.

OMG! I just listened to Cherokee on the clip from 1984 and I got goose bumps. Now I understand why Cherokee has not excited me in the least this year. The drums don't beat, its played too slowly and too softly. Who the heck is our band director and does he know how to make Cherokee sound like it used to?

Squaw, I couldn't agree with you more.

I am surprised a revolt has not taken place. I posted in a previous post that I had a friend from Vidor call me and ask me if the band was on valium this year when they played Cherokee. He said people around him were looking at each other and trying to guess why the song they had heard for 30 years was now being played at a slower pace. I guess that's what you call change??

I have heard that the band director is a very talented man that teaches the band to focus on the quality of the note. Now, I can get behind that. However, if there is one song that needs to be blasted and played up tempo, it would be Cherokee.

Was Albert Long still the band director then? I loved Mr. Long. He was sssssoooo cool. :rocks:

he was the greatest. I was so glad I got to be a part of the band while he was there. Srs. of 1981 were the last ones to have him. The next year was headed by Mr. Wadenpfuhl and Mr. Almany. Not sure how long they were there.

In 1984 the staff would have been

Band Director - Almany
Asst Band Director - Wadenpfuhl

I-ette Director - James
Asst. I-ette Director - Voss

In defense of the current director, Cherokee was slowed down during the late 90's. It was slower in during that magical time of the Fall of '99 , the slow tempo didn't hurt that team any ;) I still prefer it a little up tempo at good volume.

Hmm....are ya'll sure this was the '84 band? Just curious because the exact same thing happened with the '88 or '89 band and I was there and we were sitting in the exact same place as this video. I remember it like it was yesterday, we were told we automatically advanced because a band from the Houston area lost too many members to "no pass, no play", so we got to bypass the Regional competition all together along with LC-M. I remember them running over to us just like in this video. This was also the band that recorded the version of cherokee that is still used on the radio. It's crazy because I remember playing Cherokee after we found out, I played Trumpet too. Maybe it is from '84, but I swear I could point to exactly where I was sitting, oh well, maybe I'm being hypnotized by the way Cherokee is played now and I'm not thinking clearly... ;D!

OMG...this is what I have been saying all along! It's not just our coaching staff that needs to make some changes! IF they would just play Cherokee like it used to be played I think it would re-spark a fire in the fans that has been slowly fading over the years. The current students and players are used to it being played like it is now, but I would say 90% of the fans remember the way it was and just can't get fired up with it like it is now, at least I can't anyway. Now, you play the version that was in that video, I just might get out there and dance with the I-Spirit... :rocks:! Ok, maybe not, but it would make me want to that's for sure. So, what do we do? I mean, we may not get the coaching changes we want, but I don't think it would be that hard to convince someone to make some changes to the fight song. I think all of us who are former NDN Band members should get together and bring this issue up. Not sure exactly how to go about it, but I think it's an important issue. I mean, this is the second most talked about thing on this board, so I know it's a sore spot with many of us. Well, that's my 2 cents for this week, thanks for listening.

I listened to both renditions of Cherokee and I am not musically inclined but even I can tell what's missing--the drums and the volume and the tempo. Maybe its the band directors fault that the fans and players are not getting fired up.

I had just reposted the description that was included with the video on youtube. Maybe the original poster of the video was mistaken about the date?

I'm sure it's Fall '84. Also, I saw the owner of the video during the Lumberton game and he said "Hey I got this video of us playing Cherokee of us after contest when you were a Senior (he was a Junior then), I'll put it on YouTube so you can see it".

To that I replied "Cool" 8)

LOL I just remembered that we used to march 6 to 5 off the field at that tempo.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up for me. I remember what happened now. We weren't at contest, we were at a game. We had already gone to District contest and Regionals was in a couple of weeks. After the game Mr. Almany told us that the Regional competition had been cancelled due to the bands from the Houston area losing too many members to failing grades, so us and LC-M would automatically advance to State! I think we were playing LC-M and that's why I remember them running over to us, cause they had just found out too! Anywho, just wierd seeing that, it brought back sssooo many memories, good ones though, but man I feel old ;D!

I can't imagine marching 6 to 5 at that tempo! I was in band from '87 to '91 and we marched 8 to 5 and my legs hurt afterwards...LOL! Well, thanks for sharing all that PNG Fan, it's nice sharing all the memories with a fellow band member, especially a fellow Trumpet player !
