Not a good night. They are bigger and faster across the board

Several key players were out tonight.

The lack of energy or motivation thing can be solved by senior leaders stepping it up and coaches sitting some people down for others that do have a sense of urgency to succeed. Leadership.

Observations:
Keep it in perspective. WB is a very good 6A team with a lot of talent that also smashed PA Memorial and would level any team in our district. PN-G will be very competitive in district play.

The Indians have a lot of bright spots to build on. Trahan is a good RB. Bergeron is a straight up tough football player who always makes a difference. Crippen is going to light it up and can cover some ground when he needs too. Guarnere displayed some good speed with the 74 yard catch and run. The offensive line had it's moments especially in short yardage situations.

The defense has improved their tackling although still has room for improvement. They were was usually in position to make plays but speed kills. #16 (Seth Landry?) is a very good, aggressive LB who hits.

WO-S and WB are both fast teams that will run away from a lot of competition this season.

There are also some weaknesses, primarily on the offensive line and in the secondary. If you give a good receiver a 10 yard cushion every play he's going to make some catches. A couple of defensive starters being out didn't help matters tonight.

This offense line struggled some against WB with Jansen Ware out at OT. Ware makes a huge difference on that line including great edge protection for the QB and run blocking.

The receivers will do a better job of hanging onto the ball with more playing time.

Bottom line the Indians will improve from this scrimmage.

Also of note, there was a lot of slipping on that new turf field by both teams. What's up with that? Wrong type of cleats?

Any other observations? I know some fans might consider the above opinion as looking through purple tinted shades.

One week until season 97 kickoff. Let’s talk some football!

I didn’t go to Westbrook scrimmage, but from what I’m hearing we better find some passion. I think the team has the pieces to put a pretty good team on the field, but if there is no intensity we will be average at best.

I played at PNG many years ago. Back in those days guys played with PRIDE and HONOR and it was privilege to play for PNG. If we walked anywhere, like these kids now days do, when we got to the field house we would almost pass out from running so much and air raids. Some of these kids now days act like it’s a privilege for the coaches that they are playing for them. Some of these kids now days don’t know how to play with pride and honor. They just play to play.

Not to distract the topic, but interesting that Scorestream chose to list the PNG-Westbrook scrimmage score and no other local results are reported.

PNG started the game with passion but the overwhelming size, speed, athleticism, and talent was way above what we are fielding. Their QB is one if the most highly recruited kids in America. He ran around on us and we could not tackle him. He had on a no tackling shirt. Bit he still ran and our guys would not hit him. They were a really good really big and really fast team. Way further ong than we are with the amount of youth we have this season

That’s a great point but I remember that as being a motivation to ramp up the intensity and effort on the field. To get up and make a better effort on the next play. Never give up.
To their credit PNG linemen in the trenches were battling and winning at times. With speed there is no solution. Other than adjusting angles, etc.

My thoughts:
1) Hard to conclude much based on a scrimmage. For all we know, WB could be heading toward a 6A state championship this year.

2) A relatively young team will surely take some time to gel. That is the benefit of having tough scrimmages and pre-district games, provided they are not so tough that they damage the teams confidence excessively. This is where we need to rely on the coaches to help them view the results of these games from the proper perspective. Having said that, their progress will need to be accelerated as much as possible with Nederland being the first district game (On the other hand, that could prove to be a benefit from a motivational perspective).

3) I am not sure we should place all of the blame for any motivational deficits on this generation of players in general, or on this specific set of players. Based on my observations of PNG teams and coaching staffs over many, many years, I do have to conclude that although Faircloth and his staffs have numerous strengths, they have never struck me as being quite the motivator as was the case with some of our other outstanding coaching staffs. This is one of the few areas (along with a stronger emphasis on defense- which will hopefully occur this season) where I think the coaching staff could stand to improve a bit.

It's not that bad. PN-G's big guys in the trenches were battling and holding their ground or better most of the time.

WB has some great skill position players as did WO-S. They are tough to stop especially in the first two contests of the season. I agree with prepballfan, a lot of the big runs by the Westbrook QB would not have happened in a real game. Indian defenders were in position to hit him but pulled up. The WB QB kept running. So quite a few of those 400 yards of offense mentioned is bogus. But WB was definitely a load on both sides of the ball.

Also keep in mind that WB is a 6A team comprised of the best players in a city of 100K.

Getting those starters back will also make a big difference. In the meantime next man up is getting an opportunity to play.
