What will PN-G need to be competitive in years to come??

With so much speculation about who the next coach may or may not be and what kind of offense he is known for, we really should be focusing on retaining someone here to take over the program at PN-G that can step away from a one dimensional offense. We don't need to be known in the district as the team that will "run the ball down your throat", we need to be known as the team in the district that can do it all. We need someone in here that can develop a passing game, a well balanced running game and certainly someone to work on special teams. With an enrollment the size of PN-G, you can not tell me that we can not find 2-4 boys that can run deep and catch football. Nor do I believe we can not find a kid or two with the arm to throw it down the field.

A couple of years ago, I was at a family gathering where a young Junior High cousin (who had high hopes of becoming a PN-G football quarterback) was there with a bunch of others horsing around with a football. Someone ran deep and yelled "throw it here". The cousin's dad looked over at me with a big ole grin on his face and said, "He doesn’t need to learn to throw the ball deep.... You know that Port Neches-Groves doesn't throw the football". A day or two later I remember thinking to myself, I wonder if I had a son with sights on being a PN-G Indian that had good hands and loved catching footballs..... would I be encouraging him to learn how to block or run with the ball because "you know Port Neches-Groves doesn’t throw the football"???

We need to be grooming these young men all the while encouraging them to excel at what they are best at. I think that if you have a kid that is a Soccer player at heart with a leg on him, and he shows interest in playing football.... let's stop the non sense of making him choose one sport over another or having a coach that will not allow you to play multiple sports.

Look at all the well respected 4A football programs that year after year appear in the playoffs (and go deep). They are not known for anything other than being "good ball clubs" year after year.

Just my two cents.....

I think PNG shouldnt become just a throwing team...to many times everyone cries man we need to air it out more....it's easier to say than do...however my opinion is whenever you have no clue if an offense is lined up to pass or throw the ball...it makes it that much more difficult to stop....i would diffenitly love to see who ever gets the HC job spread it out alot and be more unpredictable. quick outs, screens, rolling a good running qb out and letting him keep it or throw it....lots of play action runs. Open it up.

Everyone is talking about Long what is his offensive style? I remember the Gulf Coast Offense from 1999 but we will not have a D. Long very often. Was that his or Burnetts?

Actually the 1999 offense was more balanced than anything. It seems like it was a pass-happy offense just because Long was so good, but I know we rushed for almost as many yards as we passed. I remember one article in the paper during the playoffs that showcased the offense and the yards passed was only about 30 yards off of the yards rushed. That's pretty amazing. I believe both Bergeron and Wortham rushed for over 1,000 yards that year also.

we need an aggresse defense... use the linebackers to pounce on the QB. need to make the QB nervous and know that he will get popped.

let bring back the wishbone offense. use the flanker as the 3rd back and pop him out in motion and do a quick psss. or you can just go ahead adn do the wishbone! unless you have a D.long or H. Tatum that can throw but to have the ability to throw or run , got to have a beefy line that can push off the ball and make them holes, or block the blitzer!

We need coaches that can see talent in a kid and grow that talent. We need coaches who will put players in a position to win and excel and not just in a position because they look like they should play there. We need our varsity coaches interacting with our middle school programs to ensure the fundamentals and schemes are being implemented at an early age. We need coaches that are not locked into a 10 play offensive scheme regardless of the situation. We need coaches who work with each other as a staff to put the team in the best position to win. We need a head coach that makes playing PN-G a nightmare for the opposing coach instead of giving him one liners for the paper. We need coaches that make sure the players know playing football for PN-G is about out working the other team and wanting it more, because they will hardly ever be able to win on talent alone. We need coaches, players, and fans believing in Honor, Pride, Tradition and all those groups giving 110% every Friday night. In my opinion those are the things that will turn the program around, not a certain scheme or coach.

That 99 team was very balanced. But what made them so successful was that they were unpredictable. One receiver sets on out to an empty backfield. And I think some people forget that Dustin ran the ball his fair share as well. The bootleg was a killer, because defenses had to defend the pass and the run with Long. Don't forget Dustin had close to 800 yards on the ground that year. Also Bo Wortham spent a lot of time in the slot.

That is what we need. More formations and the development of a QB that can run or pass. Poor Tatum this year never had a chance. We only threw on obvious passing downs and those pass plays were slow developing deep routes. Thus the defense brought the house and Tatum was on his back before he could even look up field. We also never rolled him out of the pocket to get some pressure off of him. i know he wasn't much a threat running the ball, but to get him out of the pocket some and use play action a lot more (which only makes sense for a running team) to slow down the rush.

Well said. Athletic talent will vary throughout the years but the successful teams develop/optimize the talent they have.

Dead on target. 50/50 pass/run was the strength of that 1999 team.
