2023 Offense and Defense

If we consider the last 25 seasons as the 'modern era' of high school football, when pro style, pass happy offenses became the norm, this 2023 Indian defense stands tall in terms of average points allowed per game. Below is the top 10 in points allowed from 1998-2023. The '99 defense was a beast and might be considered the best. We'll see how the '23 team compares after the season is done.

The 2023 offense is also impressive considering how many points were left on the field with early substitutions at probably an all-time high. It's not a stretch to think that might have averaged 42+ per game or more if they had kept the pedal to the metal against weaker opponents. Below is the top 10 in points per game from 1998-2023.

Excellent content. That's content that Bally's or Texas High School Sports commentators (Craig Way, Greg Tepper, et al.) can use to analyze the Indians. Thank you.

Ball control with a very good defense equals that massive point differential!!!!
Great point X. The point diff tells a story all on its own. The name of the game is not seeing how many points you can score, it’s soundly beating your opponent. Having said that, we’ll be happy with one point wins over the next 2 games. That’s all it takes. But I think the Indians will continue to impress.

We do things big around here. The majority of folks will never know the extent of influence. But we’ll definitely put together a nice ‘media package‘ to give the sports guys lots of details to fill the air with and increase awareness of PN-G football across the viewing audience if they so choose.

Several of those years have inflated numbers as well due to coaches putting backups in when the game was well in hand. Hard to accurately judge the defense primarily based on PPG.

Agree. Comparing teams is impossible. Too many variables. Like statistics, it’s just something to talk about and doesn’t measure true ability on a standard scale. Having said that, we know this defense is good and probably producing better results than in most seasons over the past 15-20 years.

214 points against is not all against the defense. There was a fumble return for td against offense in LC game. May be a few more not sure.
Same for offense as defense has scored some of those points as well.

A seldom appreciated point for sure. Although the same probably occurred during other years as well, a particularly turnover prone offense or turnover generating defense could skew the stats to some degree during a given year.

I agree with IndianFan. The stats don't tell the whole story, but they are fun to talk about. Anything that generates more discussion about the Indians is a good thing. I do know this. In today's game with all the points lighting up scoreboards, when you can hold teams to 14 or 15 points per game, you will win a lot of games. Ha-ha.

Definitely a great average for the current era regardless of the effects of the many variables that affect that stat.
