It's a great two part video (first half/second half). TJ dominated the first half...and then the tide turned in the second half. TJ had a strong crowd at that game...on the video. What was the attendance at that game? You can see sideline signs about other SETX schools, e.g., Forest Park Supports TJ. Looking back, SETX was strong in the seventies and eighties. 1975-1985, PN-G in the state championship 2x, Hebert, TJ, WB, and French. At the highest classification (4A/5A) during that 11 year stretch, SETX had a team playing the in the state championship 5x. Strong showing. Hebert won it all in 1976 at the 3A level. In case anyone is interested the 1980 TJ-Permian game is on the YouTube TV app.
I've watched some Permian videos lately from the 70's and 80's and of course have read FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. Is it true that they were consistently giving up 20 to 70 pounds per man and winning deep playoff games? I've read about their 125 pound DB'S, 140 lb LBs, 170 pound linemen, etc. Were those weights accurate or just made up to enhance the Mojo mystique? At the end Jimmy Jack mentioned ”…every time we turned our head something went wrong. It wasn’t quite right.”
Funny how that works when you are playing a formidable opponent who has just as much tradition and was just as well conditioned and also executing a well established system.
If I recall correctly, PNG was also considerably smaller than most of their opponents during the 70’s.I've watched some Permian videos lately from the 70's and 80's and of course have read FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. I could not be more proud of our team and our community. The spirit here is unmatched! I am so lucky to be a part of it and to wear the purple and white! The journey of this football season, with these coaches and our players, will stay with me forever. -- PN-G Head Coach Jeff Joseph
