A 4 min clip from Odessa Permian's point of view from 1975 vs PNG

At the end Jimmy Jack mentioned ”…every time we turned our head something went wrong. It wasn’t quite right.”

Funny how that works when you are playing a formidable opponent who has just as much tradition and was just as well conditioned and also executing a well established system. :D

That “pop up” fumble
I’ve heard my dad tell that it went “20 feet in the air”
Lol
Seeing it it actually went above their heads but he’s described that play many many times
We had just moved to TXK a few months before (the start of that school season)
So we drove a shorter distance than the PNG folks
At that age with the 77 season in my mind the Indians played in the finals every year. Haha

Hey Indianfan did you notice that the only plays come from the video you put up.

It’s all from the original game footage. Here’s more of the game.

What I enjoy even more is the audio, what little we have preserved.

Of many other hilarious memories from the Permian game
I always remember the ladies in the crowd when the other team had the ball
They would say
“GIT EEM” and “He’s right THERE”
And there were a couple of plays especially on the QB keeper plays I remember the ladies all saying that around me and I thought “they already know they’re supposed to “GIT EEM” haha

In case anyone is interested the 1980 TJ-Permian game is on the YouTube TV app.
It's a great two part video (first half/second half). TJ dominated the first half...and then the tide turned in the second half. TJ had a strong crowd at that game...on the video. What was the attendance at that game? You can see sideline signs about other SETX schools, e.g., Forest Park Supports TJ. Looking back, SETX was strong in the seventies and eighties. 1975-1985, PN-G in the state championship 2x, Hebert, TJ, WB, and French. At the highest classification (4A/5A) during that 11 year stretch, SETX had a team playing the in the state championship 5x. Strong showing. Hebert won it all in 1976 at the 3A level.

I've watched some Permian videos lately from the 70's and 80's and of course have read FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. Is it true that they were consistently giving up 20 to 70 pounds per man and winning deep playoff games? I've read about their 125 pound DB'S, 140 lb LBs, 170 pound linemen, etc. Were those weights accurate or just made up to enhance the Mojo mystique?

The coaches said they were often 30lbs light ..... not sure about the 70lbs you mentioned above though. As it was said above, the arrogance of these guys with the gall to say that PNG wasn't the best team they played and had beaten better teams. Thanks for posting. I was only 3 yrs old at the time of that game and didn't even live here yet hah. I grew up in the north (Indiana) until I moved to PN in 1986, but basketball was king in high school, not football.

If I recall correctly, PNG was also considerably smaller than most of their opponents during the 70’s.
