2021 Galena Park Preview
Coach: Spiro Amarantos. Lettermen R/L: 23/17. Starters returning O/D: 7/7. 2020: 8-3 bi-district finalist/7-1 district.

Players to watch: ATH A’marion Kelly (5-10, 160, 4.4), RB Jose Barrientos (5-9, 220, 4.9), OL Bryan Chavarria (5-11, 270), DL Isaac Covarubias (6-1, 240), DL Leo Garcia (6-1, 250), LB Ray Quintanilla (5-9, 220). Top junior: DL Tim Marshall (6-3, 250).
Other prospects: OL Isack Barboza, TE Bernardo Vasquez, QB Raul Gonzalez, OL Robert Garcia, DB Joe Ayala, DB Carlos DeLeon, LB Alex Buentello, DB JaShawn Baines.

2021 notes:
The Yellowjackets had their best season since an eight-win campaign in 2007 and Amarantos thinks 2021 could be even better with seven starters back on both sides of the ball. ATH Kelly (837 yards, 15 TDs rushing) will see time at every offensive skill position, and he could see time on defense and return kicks, as well. RB Barrientos (620 yards, 8 TDs rushing) is a tough inside runner and will be a great complement to the speed that Kelly brings to the table. The defensive line is a strength with the return of Covarubias (56 tackles, 6 sacks), Garcia (54 tackles, 3 sacks) and talented junior Marshall (44 tackles, 4 sacks). LB Quintanilla (44 tackles, 12 TFL, 2 sacks) is a three-year starter and will lead the defense.

The 2007 team was very good and had a shot at Lamar in 2nd round had the coaches not panicked and started throwing too much. And, poor play calling late in the 2nd Q with PN-G down a TD and first and goal.

PN-G can handle the run if the pass threat is absent.

Here’s hoping our defensive coaches went into the archives to see how we shut vidor down just a short while back. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, just do what was done before. It worked. This is a winnable game for these Indians. Coach them up and let’s go get ‘em.

GP doubled their average pass attempts in the last game of the season completing 6 for 92 yards and 2 TDs. Probably trying to diversify a little before the playoffs. Indians will still need to defend the pass, or those off target lobs that can still go the distance.

Stack the box and make GP throw it. PN-G plays 10 yards off the ball and the safeties are usually so deep they need a ticket to get into the game. There should be no surprises or lobs over the top. Tackle. Get them on the ground. If the Indians can make a few stops, get on top by a few scores, it will take GP out of its comfort zone. PN-G must tackle well. On offense, give the ball to Trahan and make GP commit to stopping the run. Then, spread the ball around. The offense was clicking vs. Santa Fe. Duplicate that game plan and the offense should be fine. No turnovers. Here's to a bi-district win. Go Indians.

Be more aggressive with the linebackers. Too many games where there is a linebacker or two just casually standing around or jogging towards the action. Rarely in position to make a tackle. If the linebackers are not at the point of attack and mixing it up every play then why are they out there? If any player is taking a play off get him off the field.

This statement is very incorrect concerning our current linebackers. Not sure what your watching.

Anyone can watch the games on TexanLive. I respect your opinion, but what I said is absolutely correct. Every team has areas that can improve and make big differences in outcomes. This is one. Linebackers attacking or better covering assignments, tackling and wrapping up will result in fewer big gains straight up the middle. More urgent pursuit will also result in more tackles. Pretty basic football. How is that incorrect?

That would be spelled Klein. Still waiting for that check. I guess they forgot to pay me for that role?

Here’s a waterboy like definition of defensive roles that even his mama would be proud of.

“In football, a team's defense is often only as good as its linebackers, as these strong, speedy players are the portrait of toughness and grit that epitomizes the game of football. A normal defensive scheme will have the defensive linemen holding their ground on blockers while the defensive backs in the secondary are locked in pass coverage, so the linebackers are usually the ones making the tackle on any given play. At the end of the game, linebackers usually stick out on the stat sheet, as they almost always lead the team in tackles.”

If the secondary is having to make tackles on running backs, you might just need some stronger linebacker play.
