Big Bass Drum

Has the band ever thought about getting a "BIG BASS DRUM", something on wheels maybe that could be pulled around on the track--used to start CHEROKEE off and get the crowd into it. Similar to "BIG BERTHA" that the Texas band has , but not as big of course. Maybe this would help the fans to know when CHEROKEE was being played, and it would help the band with other cadences and spirit songs they play to Fire-Up the players and crowd.

Just a thought?

Brilliant suggestion!

It would add some much needed, booming BASS. And it could be another signature piece of the band.

Maybe call it Big Geronimo or something like that. Or maybe not...

I like that idea of naming the drum, you could even have a contest with the band /and or student body to name it. It would be another great tradition to start at the reservation!

Great idea!!!

Someone should run the idea by Mr. Wells and get his feedback/approval.

That would be a nice addition to the Indian tradition!!!!!

:woot: Always thought this was a great idea. I make large ceremonial pow wow drums. These drums are typical of what you see at pow wows
but not the big bass drums you are probably thinking about. I always thought a real Native drum would go along way in helping the band, cheerleaders, indianettes and twrilers add more to pep rallies or halftime shows. For too long all the band or student body has been able
to give as far as tradition is Cherokee which is great but how about a new other tradition. I think it would be exciting as well as unique to have the majorettes, indianettes twrilers ect play a real wardrum before or during the game. I could make the drum for little or no cost but the shipping would have to be paid for. Once received the band could paint it and name it and then it could become part of PNG student pride. If anyone is interested just send me a post and I'll get back to you.

Sounds like a terrific idea, if the school agreed.

If that's not something the booster club could purchase, there's always this congregation of dedicated supporters that have purchased items in the past.

Do you have any detailed info, photos, etc of the drum?

I also think this is a great idea--and a new tradition from the Faircloth era of PNG football. See--we don't have to copy anyone.

This question is for Bandkid or any other band person!!!! Why is Central's drums seem to be louder than our drum section?? Is it the type of drum they use? The way they play the drum or something else? I was counting last night (at half time) and it looks like they have approx. as many drum players as we do, but their drum section just seems to be louder. Or maybe it was that their band just got to be more obnoxious by their constant loud playing the WHOLE first half of the game. We could not even hear the announcer other than when he would say "another Central 1st down" ::)

It was just a question. I was not a band member. So I was just curious.

I'm not trying to be overly critical, because it's a terrific band. But the entire PNG band seems to play at a low volume. I could barely hear them half the time on the game replay.

Two reasons:

  • Their drums are bigger.
  • Their drums are "loose."

We'll be adding in a second quint and a bigger bass drum next year, and there are rumors going around about an additional snare as well.

Drums are tuned by how "tight" they are, but this also effects volume. If a drum is very tight, it's hard to get that loud, resounding volume. Central's drums are very loose (watch when they play, you can see them shaking), and thus are very loud, although out of tune. Our drums are tighter because of our emphasis on tuning.

This is because of our focus on artistic playing. Schools like Central and Ozen focus almost solely on volume and completely ignore dynamics (and Central appears to ignore tuning and almost any aspect of a conventional, legitimate marching show as well). This is one of the reasons that they typically do not place well at contests and send relatively few kids to Area, Region, or State bands, whereas schools like LC-M, Vidor, PN-G, and Nederland excel in such competitions.

Central's band may be entertaining but even with the "announcer" telling us the name of the song, I couldn't recognize it. I guess it all in what your school wants.

OOOOOOOO, thanks for answering my queston and the information. I was just curious. Can we get BIGGER drums? If their drums are played "loose" than how hard is it to tune a drum? How hard would it be for our drum section to loosing their drums some just for the games? Again just curious

It's not very easy to perfectly tune a drum, and they have to be tuned for our halftime performances.

We do have a bigger bass drum and it will be added in next year. The percussion section is growing, and with more percussionists comes more sound.
