This is me from the outside (like, the 530 miles away sort of outside) looking in, so take it for what it's worth.
In my opinion, there are three issues with the facility.
1. Obviously, the economy. All four years the project has been underway, the economy has basically sucked, and right now it's only getting worse. People just don't have the confidence or the disposable income they normally have to put into booster clubs, projects and even charities at the moment.
2. The make-up of the PN-G fanbase. Folks, the PN-G community (really Mid-County at large) is aging. Baby boomers are starting to retire and are going on fixed incomes, and the generations that were watching PN-G football back in the '50s and the '70s have been on fixed incomes for years now that aren't exactly keeping pace with the cost of living and inflation. The poor state of the economy isn't the only thing affecting the typical PN-G fan's disposable income at the moment.
3. The most manageable problem: organization and focus. Now by that, I don't mean that the Booster Club isn't organized or effective, because it is. It wasn't that long ago that the BC was making major contributions to several of PN-G's athletic programs. It's just that the focus of the BC hasn't really been on the indoor facility. We've been talking about the indoor facility for nearly three years now, and what do we have to show for it? A letter to our season ticket holders and school board approval? No fundraisers geared specifically toward the indoor facility, no capital campaign, no attempts to elicit donations from local businesses and industry, not even much of an attempt to get word about the project out into the public domain. If the indoor facility was the prime focus of the BC and the community at large, the money would have been raised by now. If there's any hope for that project, somebody has to stand up and make it a primary objective. Somebody is going to have to start making organized, planned efforts to get the money together and go through with it.
