BEAUMONT — With 1:30 to play, it looked like Beaumont Central had tied up the game with Humble and had a chance to take the lead with an extra point.
But Robert Mitchell’s 14-yard touchdown run was called back for holding and the Humble defense stopped Central on the next three plays, preserving a 27-21 victory over Central in a Class 4A Division I second-round playoff game at the Carrol A. “Butch” Thomas Educational Support Center in Beaumont.
“We hated for that last one to be called back, but that’s a part of football,” Central coach Andrew Washington said. “I feel like we got outplayed overall in the end. We did well at times, but when it counted, that’s (what’s important).”
On fourth-and-16 from the 17-yard line, Brison Burris jumped up and deflected Central quarterback Robert Mitchell’s pass to the end zone to seal the win.
“The final stop was awesome,” Humble coach Walt Beasley said. “(Burris) made a big play for us. Big-time players make big plays.”
Humble held a 24-14 lead near the beginning of the fourth quarter after a 26-yard field goal from Andres Franco.
Central answered after Mitchell scored on a 9-yard quarterback keeper. A 23-yard fake-punt pass from Lawrence Malveaux to Gene Cross kept the drive alive for the Jaguars.
Humble’s Franco kicked his second field goal of the game, a 37-yarder, on the next drive, giving the Wildcats a six-point lead.
Senior running back Darius Lynch scored all three of Humble’s touchdowns, and he finished with 17 carries for 109 yards.
Mitchell finished 6-of-11 passing for 79 yards for Central. Kyle Washington was 10-of-22 for 120 yards for Humble. Burris was Humble’s leading receiver with two catches for 51 yards.
Humble (11-1) moves on to play Friendswood in the third round at 2 p.m. Nov. 27 at Thorne Stadium. Central (8-4), the district champion, is the third team in District 20-4A to be eliminated from the playoffs.
“I expected a close game, a tough game, and it was,” Andrew Washington said. “They’ve got a good team and our kids tried their best, but sometimes you’re just overmatched.”
