Christmas Past

As we near the Christmas holiday a very distant memory popped into my head.

Dryden’s used to be a popular clothing store in downtown Groves. On the corner of Lincoln and Jefferson. For the Christmas season they would mail out Christmas ‘song books’ that contained the lyrics and musical staff for a dozen or so popular Christmas songs. That simple little pamphlet used to bring this kid a lot of joy. Does anyone else remember those?

It’s funny how the small things in life can remain so memorable. I suppose it’s really just an artifact associated with remembering a time and place in life, the people and circumstances, and the excitement and possibilities of youth. Regardless I think it’s good to always hold onto happy memories no matter how trivial they may seem to others.

Does anyone else have good memories to share of Christmas’s past?

I remember those now that you mention it. I remember the Christmas parades which seemed bigger back then, but I think we all have that impression since we are physically smaller as children. Downtown Groves was more alive back then with Drydens, the old Bruces on the corner and other retailers on Lincoln Ave. Big Box stores gave use convenience at the expense of losing these places in small towns across America.
