The Beaumont Surprise is no longer surprising. They consistently publish articles aimed at criticizing PNG.

Growing up I always greatly respected the A-C tribe. Many visits there over a lifetime in support of them.

Stating that specific symbolism “decreases the self-esteem of Native youths." is a sad testimony and mindset. Real self esteem is earned from personal accomplishment and nothing else. It’s also sad to see the outright hatred vented towards the PN and G communities. There has never been any malice directed toward Native Americans by anyone in the combined communities. As a matter of fact, as has been stated here before, PN and G recognized and supported NA culture when it was uncommon to do so. Yet only negative and even vile generalizations are now directed towards those two communities re this topic. An ironic reality and another sad testimony of the continued division of our society.

Contact the A-C, offer to meet with them, offer to add instructive information to the school's curriculum, and demonstrate there is no mockery or ill-will. Most likely, a civil exchange of information will not suffice or satisfy their agenda. What else can you do? Ignore them and do not engage in divisive arguments. That's basically what PN-GISD has been doing. The ISD has remained civil and low key. No one has added fuel to the fire. Eventually, the UIL will require schools with Native American team names and mascots to change. It's all about the money. The UIL does not want to lose money from its business partners, e.g., sports vendors, sponsors of televised games, etc. It's coming. Even Florida State will have to reconsider. Other tribes are putting pressure on the Seminole Nation to withdraw its support of FSU. The NCAA does not want the political pressure that comes with Native American mascots and team names. It's not going away.

What gets me is they don’t appreciate the fact it is honoring the the Indian nation as a whole. An Indian actually helped create the dance the Indian Spirit preforms. They should be appreciative that back in the days America gave them free land for their Reservations that they don’t pay taxes on. Hell, they ought to be thankful they weren’t just wiped out when America was formed. If they want to be like that. Then make them start paying taxes on their property and for their Casinos. It’s not fair that we have to and they don’t. I would like to see a petition passed around for them to start paying taxes on everything they have like the rest of the American people.

Can't take them seriously. They tried to make a spectacle of this by zeroing in on one school and inviting the news to cover this grandstanding affair (lest we forget that Jacksonville, TX, Santa Fe, TX, and Cleveland, TX, just to name a few other indian mascot schools, are all within a 2-hour radius of A-C.

Oh and look, they publish the certification with the wrong year. Attention to detail, or lack thereof, tells me all I need to know--let's create a story to get our name in the news!

Get out of here with this fabricated BS.

For what it’s worth, it’s a really bad idea to cause a ruckus in the Speaker’s home county, and also the district of the lone Texas House member who’s filed a gambling bill ever session for a decade or more, four months before the legislative session where you’ve hired a ton of lobbyists to expand your gambling operation.

And to think, I used to tell anyone in the Capitol who’d listen that the AC reservation is the best place to start gambling in the state of Texas. Won’t be doing that again.

Whosoever plays the game of pointing fingers better be ready for the retribution. Even people that live their lives with grace and goodwill toward others have limits to what they can and should tolerate.

I personally don’t support or encourage gambling. And the active encouragement for others to willfully throw their money to the owners of the establishment. Maybe, just maybe certain groups can focus on more positive things in life that might just build that ‘lack of self esteem’. Including NOT portraying the very images that they criticize others for doing. Including all the sales of the bonnets, tomahawks, knives, etc that remind modern Native Americans of their heritage. How is that working out with the self esteem? I guess as long as it makes a buck anything goes and double standards prevail if it’s to their advantage.

Interesting that part of their "argument" is that we "dance around". The fact is, our Indian Spiriti is copying their own dance!
