Nederland boys claim team title in LC-M's meet

The Port Arthur News

LITTLE CYPRESS -- Nederland showcased its usual strong suits, depth and distance runners, to edge Lumberton for the boys team title Thursday night at the 17th annual Battlin' Bear Relays.

The Bulldogs compiled 135 points to hand first-year head coach Chris Theriot his first team trophy at Nederland. Lumberton and Port Neches-Groves followed in second and third with 128 and 107 points.

Coach Kyle Segura's Indians actually brought home more gold medals -- six -- than Theriot's Bulldogs -- three. That's why Nederland's depth made a major difference.

"We had some returning athletes coming back who had success in regional meets and we had 45 who got off the bus and competed," Theriot said. "We make every effort here at the younger levels to take track real seriously."

The Nederland winners were Trent Fulk in the 3,200 meters with a 10:36.12 and Layne Smith in the 800 and 1,600 meters with respective times of 2:03.78 and 4:48.30.

It might be argued by Indians' fans that junior high jumper Dylan Richards of PN-G would stand out more than any other individual in terms of opening-week performance, though.

A seventh-place finisher at the 98th annual UIL track and field championships in Austin, Dylan cleared 6-4 on June 5 to close the 2009 UIL outdoor season as a sophomore. Richards opened the 2010 outdoor campaign as a junior by clearing a winning height of 6-6 at LC-M.

Three other Tribesmen brought home the gold across the Orange County bridge. Two double winners were Cody Ross in the long and triple jumps and Tyler Wright in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Kyler Cross won his district meet last spring by clearing 11-6 in the pole vault. Kyler opened the new season by winning LC-M's meet with a vault of 12-0.

Vidor dominated the girls varsity division with 165 points.
