Crosby Cougars 2021 Preview
Coach: Jerry Prieto. Lettermen R/L: 25/23. Starters returning O/D: 3/3. 2020: 12-4 state finalist/6-1 district. Key losses: Reggie Branch (Incarnate Word).

Players to watch: K Trevor Helburg (6-0, 185), DL McCoy Casey (6-1, 250), WR Kameren Kirkwood (6-1, 180), OL Demetrius Strahan (6-5, 315), QB Cyrin Myles (5-11, 175), WR/DB Braden Womack (6-0, 160). Top junior: TE/DL Matthew Jordan (6-2, 220). Top sophomore: QB Kade Eudy (6-1, 150).

Other prospects: OL Braden Wright, DB Desmond Tisdom, RB Quincy Jones, DL Chancellor Bradley, WR Brian Samuel, LB Vincent Pulido, WR Kristian Roberson.

2021 notes: Crosby got red-hot late in the season and carried that momentum all the way to a state title game in Prieto’s second season at the helm, but much of the production from that squad was lost to graduation. Crosby’s offense will need to be rebuilt, but they have a great building block in WR Kirkwood (28-519 yards, 5 TDs receiving), who could emerge as one of Houston’s top receivers. Myles (266 yards, 2 TDs passing; 188 yards, 3 TDs rushing) showed promise in a backup role and will get the first look at QB in 2021. Strahan and Wright return to anchor the offensive line. The defense is led by district defensive MVP DL Casey (127 tackles, 24 TFL, 4 sacks), who led the team in tackles a year ago and is going to be the emotional leader of the defense.

The Indians will need to have their best performance of the season to win this one.

The 2020 state finalist Cougars will be the toughest opponent by far that the Indians have faced this year. The Cougars are on a roll with 5 straight wins and a perfect district record.

Crosby features a balanced offensive attack averaging around 200 yards per game running and 200 passing.

Junior QB Cyrin Miles (#10 ) has passed for 1202 yards on 71 completions, a 16.9 yard average and 17 touchdowns.

Kameran Kirkwood (#14) is their leading receiver with 38 catches for 739 yards (19.4 average). The Cougars like to spread the ball around to 3 other receivers as well.

Senior Quincy Jones (#20) leads the rushing attack with 663 yards but QB Miles is also a threat with 458 yards gained this season.

Miles, Kirkwood and Jones are the main threats but the Indians will need to have their best defensive effort to limit big gains by any of the Crosby offensive players.

The Indians counter with their own balanced attack led by Cole Crippen's 1,367 yards and 18 touchdowns passing and Koby Trahan's 1,236 yards and 13 TDs rushing. A big offensive line and a talented group of receivers including Chance Prosperie, Landon Guarnere, Cooper Faircloth, Carson Wallace and Daylon Bergeron form a potent attack for the Cougars to contend with.

The Crosby defense has allowed 196 points this season while the Indian D has given up 214.

The key to this game will be better tackling and improved pass coverage by an up and down but capable PN-G defense, and an error free offensive game. A tall order but not impossible as a young PN-G offensive group has improved in a lot of areas since week 1.

The simplest of defensive game planning says double Kirkwood, attack the LOS to disrupt and focus on stopping Jones. And just make Miles play a perfect game to counter it. But easier said than done and Crosby has other players that can move the chains too. Hoping for an outstanding game from PNG middle linebacker Gardiner and others to limit those big runs up the middle.

Comparing common components is no science but it's an interesting view of the metrics.

He single-handedly won the BH game at the end. Reminded me of Roschon in terms of competitive desire. Hopefully we will be able to contain the QB runs better than earlier games. If not, it could be a long night.

Put your fastest/best tackling defensive player out there as a spy on the QB. Don't know who that is. Probably Koby Trahan but he's needed on offense to run for 200+ and a chance at winning. Really, really need some of the defensive leaders to step up, or become one.

He did score on the 2 point conversion that tied it up. But video and photos showed his knee was down AND out of bounds before the football touched the pylon. Stopped short. Good break for Crosby that sent it to OT otherwise BH wins that game. Win some lose some.

Comparison of last common opponent, Kingwood Park is skewed.

Crosby 538 yards of offense, KP 309 yards of offense, 67-13
PNG 662 yards, KP 389, 56-40

Crosby's 67 points was helped by KP's turnovers. Likewise KP's 40 points against PNG (33 offensive points) was assisted by turnovers. Both teams played backups in this game with the Indians rotating backs and other positions throughout the game as usual and playing backup on both side of the ball late in the game. Otherwise the Indians could have easily scored 70 points of offense and stopped some late scoring by Kingwood Park.

No question Crosby will be tough to beat but the mismatch is not as great as fans would like, or not like to think. But allowing KP 40 points (33 by their offense) shows that sloppy and poor play on defense will result in video game numbers for a good offensive opponent. So *if* PN-G can play to their potential on defense and stop 2-3 drives, the game will be competitive. Otherwise it will take outscoring them which calls for offensive perfection or at least 90% effectiveness in moving the chains and scoring.

More interesting offensive metrics. Game comparisons are usually an act of futility but the point again is to bust the myth of complete domination by Crosby. The numbers show offensive output by PN-G and Crosby in district play. Game stats against non-common opponents are not shown. (Texas City and Nederland) Most numbers are from MaxPreps and cross-referenced with local media.

Defensive comparisons are more difficult minus availability of all team stats. Kingwood Park was held to 309 yards by Crosby and 389 yards by PN-G. Barbers Hill gained 618 against Crosby and 646 against PN-G. Dayton gained 383 against PN-G and 420 against Crosby.

Regardless Crosby has a +30 point advantage in points allowed giving up 80 points in 3 common games while PN-G gave up 110. Crosby has a big edge on turnovers by opponent and the Indians have given up multiple defensive TDs on turnovers.

Judging by the numbers neither team can brag about playing defense.
Crosby allowed 449 ypg against these teams.
PN-G allowed 474 ypg.
Both teams played backups late in games so neither team can claim an unfair comparison.

Great work as usual. Its easy when you have the most comprehensive stats and historical data on the web for a high school football team.

Crosby's DL has an active and disruptive player that must be accounted for on every play. #40 McCoy Casey. He can wreck the line of scrimmage and create problems for the PN-G run game. The Indians have the size and strength on the OL to do their own damage at the line of scrimmage, but, #40 for Crosby needs undivided attention. Another key will be a clean game...no TOs or 15-yard penalties. I vote to run the ball, run the ball, and run the ball some more. Shorten the game, limit the snaps for Crosby, and see what happens in the 4Q. See if you can grind the game down to one or two possession in the late 4Q. No pooch kicks. Let the kicker bomb away through the end zone. If we get a possession in Crosby territory and we have to decide between a 4th down conversion and a FG, use our strong kicking game. Need strong game management ala the FBM game last year. Even though PN-G came up short vs. FBM, it was one of the best coached games by PN-G and the kids executed the game plan almost to the perfection of a major upset. Let's do that again and beat Crosby.

No doubt they are good. There’s a dude on that PN-G o-line that can handle whoever comes across it. The other guys are no slouch either.
