Another example. One of the games. :08 seconds in the half from the 8 yard line. The Colts were trying one pass to the end zone then settle for FG. My advice (defense) would be rush 3 with a spy or two. And instruct every man to man DB to absolutely tackle their assigned eligible receiver. The QB has no place to throw the ball and time either runs out or close to it. The O gets an untimed down from the 4 but 9/10 will go ahead and kick the FG. The result is that the O doesn’t get that extra play (in reality) to try for the TD.
For that matter (in the Same vein) the Offense is trying to run out the clock but knows that without the first down the other team will get a crack at the ball. Same principle. Every blocker TACKLES their defender and the ball carrier runs for the first down and more taking extra time off the clock. 6-8 or more seconds go off the clock the defense has no other choice than to take the penalty. So it’s first down again. Each down either gets declined (accept whatever augmented yardage resulting) or accepted therefore running that play’s seconds off the clock.

In the NFL, the DBs need to tackle the eligible receivers outside of the end zone. If a penalty occurs in the end zone, then the ball is placed at the one yard line. In that instance, there might be a few coaches willing to use the untimed down for the win at the one yard line versus settling for a FG and forcing OT.

In the NCAA and TXHSFB, I'm not sure what happens if a penalty occurs inside the end zone. One untimed down from? Half the distance? At the one yard line? I'm not sure.

It would be a defensive holding call preferably at the line of scrimmage 5 yards automatic first down or half the distance to the goal. In most cases the QB would not even attempt a throw with the receiver incapacitated. (By the hold) :rocks:

To be clear also. This particular play was second quarter. Just one tool in the tool box not saying it would be the right choice in all situations. But I did see a “punt” hold to run out the last :20 seconds of the game without actually punting. When the punt coverage team finally made it to the punter he stepped out of the back of the end zone (3 point lead) safety. 2 points awarded game over. That’s the stuff I love. Most people would just punt and keep fingers crossed they don’t return the punt etc.

And I’m saying why couldn’t you do this on all four downs even gaining first down yardage hanging out at their one yard line if needed. They would HAVE TO accept the penalty therefore running all that time off the clock each successful try. Worst case scenario you make a small gain and they decline the penalty accepting the down. (My guess is that you’d gain yardage each time. Then once the clock is able to run down with the kneel down do that. I think this would work with close to 3:00 left where in normal situations you would have to punt (no timeouts)
