Nelson wins reader vote for Player of the WeekAugust 29, 2011 at 3:15 pm by David Henry

Port Neches-Groves receiver Jayce Nelson won the reader vote for the Beaumont Enterprise Southeast Texas High School Football Player of the Week Award.
Quarterback Terrence Singleton of Port Arthur Memorial was the staff selection.

Nelson, a senior receiver at PN-G, had nine receptions for 130 yards and two touchdowns in PN-G’s 42-0 win over Gregory-Portland. The 6-foot-1 Nelson was a second-team District 20-4A selection last season and a first-team Beaumont Enterprise Super Gold selection.

Nelson won with 48 percent of the vote, edging out Matt Menard of Bridge City, who had 40 percent of the vote.

Menard completed 7 of 10 passes for 199 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. The Baylor baseball commit rushed six times for 150 yards and two touchdowns in a 61-3 win over Shepherd.

The other nominees were running back Nick Barber (Kelly), receiver Trevor Bell (Hamshire-Fannett), running back David Bolinger (Vidor) and Singleton (Memorial).

Singleton won the staff pick for Player of the Week after completing 11 of 16 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns and rushing 10 times for 57 yards in Memorial’s 42-14 win over Central.

Something similar happened with a Facebook post for the Band of the Week during MCM last year.

So, from now on, we keep the polls under wraps and ban all Nederland posters for a week. ;D
