PN-G (8-1) vs Dayton (4-5)

Might be a good game to let #25 and #26 go to work. And then bring in #4 for some 3rd down magic. He looked very comfortable running the ball last night. #27 needs a break to heel up before the playoffs start.

We will miss #15 for sure. He is a tough, hardnosed running back.
Another mention for Diaz. Quick and strong. Runs hard. He looked great when he got some varsity playing time as a sophomore RB.

I remember #26 from the spring game. He had some carries in the Splendora game and was productive. He also had a fumble and a dropped hand off that the offense recovered. I've heard his name for the past year from a couple of locals. They thought he would be in the RB rotation with #15 and #27. Hopefully, we get to see #25, #26, and #27 vs. Dayton. I know that #25 is small, but pound-for-pound, he runs hard and he runs north/south...he's not a dancer or prancer. When he's carried the ball, he put his foot in the ground and went north/south.

IndianFan, do you have a blurb on Dayton? I don't know much about the Broncos, except Jerry Prieto is now coaching Dayton and he is a very good coach. He plays his best kids both ways...some kids--the great athletes will never leave the field. He wants speed on defense, more speed on offense, and he wants the ball in open space. He made Crosby a powerhouse. He played the best talent all the time in all three phases of the game.

2024 Preview

Coach: Jerry Prieto. Lettermen R/L: 22/20. Starters returning O/D: 4/6. 2023: 4-6/2-5 district.

Players to watch: ATH Denim Foster (5-11, 195), WR/DB Ashanti Allen (6-1, 190), OL/DL Donahvan Thibodeaux (6-5, 265), WR/DB Braeden White (5-11, 185), QB Jerry Prieto, Jr. (6-0, 170), RB/LB Merkle Judge (5-8, 175). Top juniors: DB Rakin Akmal (5-11, 175), OL Tyler Chavez (6-4, 290). Top sophomore: TE/DE Ayden Carrizales (6-3, 205).

Other prospects: DB Aaron Wright, LB Andrew Soliz, DL Angelo Hadley, TE/DE Marcus James, DB Jaleel Kendrick, WR Jesse Price, DB Kiran Simon.

2024 notes: New head coach Jerry Prieto returns to the area after spending last year as the head coach at Lake Worth. He inherits an intriguing squad that will look to get a playoff spot in a challenging District 8-5A Division II. ATH Foster (810 yards, 11 TDs passing; 505 yards, 14 TDs rushing) spent much of his time at QB a year ago, and he could move all over the field this year and be one of the area’s most dangerous weapons. Sophomore QB Prieto Jr. started 11 games at Lake Worth a year ago with his elite arm talent. WR/DB Allen is a two-way starter and four-year varsity starter for the Broncos, and Prieto calls him, “a big-time playmaker.” Junior DB Akmal (62 tackles) is the leading returning tackler for the defense.

If we consider yardage and points in their games against the 'top' teams in the district so far, this is how it went. Hunstville destroyed them (-5 total yards) and they gained 292 yards against Nederland.

Huntsville (0-49)
Lake Creek (17-57)
Montgomery (14-47)
Nederland (17-41)

Aren't they on their 3rd quarterback this season? I know the coaches son was the starter but he got hurt. Then I thought I read the back up got hurt too. Is this up to date info?

I thought they were on like the 5th QB. It’s been a tough season for them. They have a few guys that can play, but Dayton will not be competitive with PNG. Should be a 30 point win at least.

Their QB went down against Montgomery Lake Creek. He was a great running, passing QB.
The new QB is actually two. One is mostly a runner and the other passing/running.
They have a good kicker and a few good runners. Receivers might be starved if QB passing weak.
Defensively they are weak on the passing defense. They will do well if they stack the box for run heavy.
Just my quick opinions after reviewing their last 3 games.

I think we need a Tuesday evening Avenue Axe unofficial scouting team to review the next week and have an adult beverage or two? ;)

Let’s see who else the PNG coaches can ‘recruit’ from the team and include in a more prominent, productive capacity to help heal the wounds and soft spots. Players that can step up and be great. Who can possibly be the difference between an earlier than desired playoff exit and the ultimate high school football achievement again. This team still has the core ability and heart, and coaching staff to claim the title of the greatest era in PNG history to date. Believe until the last whistle blows.

PNG needs help on defense setting the out side edge. #44 and #40 are very physical and publishing pancake blockers on offense. Could use that mind set and skill set to set the outside edge on defense.
PNG lost their leading tackler (MLB) and State Championship Defense MVP. The logical replacement was #4 at MLB. Glad to see it finally happen in the 8th game of the season. But it’s a double move and someone else had to learn the outside LB position and keys starting in the 8th game of the season. Better late than never.
It’s nice to be able to build for the future. But, The need is in the present and best athletes need to be on the field to fill the exposed gaps all season.

PNG Offense has to evolve. If PNG fans know the coaching play calling tendencies why is it surprising that opponents are scheming to stop it. A little finesse (creativity) added to superior talent spells success. Variety is the spice of life.

somebody is gonna start having to catch some balls to take pressure off the running backs
Can’t catch what is not called or thrown. Rushing Ten in the box. QB does not have the time to throw the ball 30-40 yds down field into double coverage. Rushing Ten in the box prevents QB roll outs from being effective. Too much early pressure from edge rushers. Having a hard time recalling the last short pass.
