Question Indian Nation?

I posted this on SETXSports.com, but wanted to get your thoughts as well.

Craig Stump
I know he recently stated in the newspaper that he was not interested in the PNG job, but my question is why not? Is this just a smoke screen? Coaches say they are not interested in this job or that all the time only to take the job in the end. Some info to take into consideration:

1. $20K plus per year raise at PNG. Stump currently makes $73K per year as do the other two BMT head coaches. A $20K a year raise for Stump to stay would cost the BISD $60K per year as they pay all three coaches the same.

2. Athletic Coordinator position at PNG. Stump is not AD at West Brook.

3. Best facilities in SETX at PNG. Even when BMT builds there new stadium, WB will have to share it and it will not be on site. Practice facilities will not get any better at WB.

4. Better academics at PNG for his kids. He has two sons that will soon be in HS. Would you want your kids in the BISD or PNGISD!!!

5. PNG is the only game in town. West Brook has to battle with Central and Ozen within the BISD for needs. They also can't really setup a feeder program because the students at the BMT Jr. Highs could end up at any of the three schools. At PNG he could begin developing talent and his program from Junior leagues on up.

6. Fan support at PNG is outstanding. PNG will follow. West Brook not so much. Win at PNG and you will get more media attention that you would if you win at West Brook because of the incredible following.

7. Probably easier to win a 4A title than a 5A title. The numbers alone are stagering. The biggest 4A schools are right at 2,000 students with the smallest around 1,000. The biggest 5A schools are nearing 5,000 students with the smaller schools around 2,100 (WB-2400 being on the small end). PNG is a mid sized 4A, but gets small 5A numbers for football turnout in 9th grades through 12th grades.

The overall talent may be better at WB, but the talent that they have to compete against is also much, much greater.

Also, food for thought, a local 4A coaching icon thinks Stump is the guy and thinks he would be crazy not to take it. That's just one coaches "opinion", but says a lot. I tend to agree with him when looking at the pro's and con's.

If its a smokescreen its a good one because I have family on the WB staff that also say hes not interested...this does not mean its true but take that for what its worth.

I love PNG as much as the rest of you, but why would a coach leave a 5A program for 4A? Stump's next is collegiate. PNG is no where near as high profile as West Brook is.

MONEY! It happens all the time.

And your dead wrong about West Brook being higher profile than PNG. Katy, North Shore, The Woodlands, LaMarque are all higher profile Houston area than PNG, yes, but not West Brook.

Stump was already collegiate!

Katy, La Marque, etc may be higher profile than PNG. But if the program turns around, playoff success returns, and the massive crowds start following the team across the state, PNG will regain a great deal of notoriety. I'll say it again, PNG has PROVEN fan support that surpasses SLC, Katy, La Marque, Permian, and all other traditionally great programs across the state. That type of interest will be noticed and the head coach will benefit from it.

I agree this is at least a lateral move for Stump. Being from another area I had never heard of West Brook but I had heard of the pride & tradition of PNG football. Also, WB does not have the following that PNG does. If you watch the clips on the news the stands are practically empty at their football games.

Let also not forget that Art Briles went from coaching 4A Stephenville to TTU as a RB Coach,to UH as HC and now to Baylor as HC.

Craig Stump has already coached on a collegiate staff (6 years Miss State with Sherrill and 3 years at Tulane) so if he wanted to coach at the college level he would have stayed in the collegiate ranks. However, I recognize that career goals can and do change.

We do not need Stump! He is an ex rival!
half the kids playing parents were your rival.i like to think maroon/gold=purple.
PAHLEEEZZZZ.......You are making me sick!!! I may throw up!!!! NEVER can maroon/gold come even near to making purple. You forget you've got older, experienced PNG fans on this site, too. I remember a diehard Jacket fan that I worked with who constantly talked trash about PNG and said "I'd die before I ever supported PNG". Five years later I saw him at one of our games wearing purple and white! Did I have fun then!!!

Look Squaw I appreciate the fact that you have been a PNG fan your whole life, but to say that TJ people dont make up a lot of PNG fan base now is ridiculous. I think PNG fans have always had more spirit than any other school that I know. There are a lot of people from PA paying these high tax rates in PN that help support that school. Dont turn this in to TJ vs. PNG thing.

If PN-G can get Craig Stump, then I say go for it. He loves to spread the field and throw the ball downfield. He can develop QBs. Would be a good grab for the Indians. If not, then hopefully another good coach will cast his fortunes with our Indians. Time will tell.

I know many Yellow Jackets turned Indians ... with the consolidation of TJ, Lincoln, and SFA, I know several maroon and gold families that moved to Mid-County and switched allegiances/loyalties from TJ to either PN-G or Nederland. Change happens. Just roll with the flow.

Merry Christmas to all. Go Indians. Peace.

Somebody may need to remind you it's not 1945 Squaw. I, too, am a tax payer within the Port Neches area. Although I did not grow up here I support our schools. I think what we are witnessing with squaw's attitude is..."if you did not grow up with me in Port Neches, you don't belong." This has been an all too common theme among locals that have never ventured past Taylor's bayou. Believe it or not Squaw, the world does not drop off into oblivion once you pass Winnie. I have met a large number of former Port Arthur residents living in Port Neches that have children within the PNISD and have found their support for Port Neches unbelievable. Tiger27...I'm with you brother.

I agree Smurf...Comments like those from Squaw go hand in hand with another post I had about coaches looking into this job and reading posts like that...

I also agree that PNG is not the only school in Mid-County that coaches want to coach at....The times have changed a bit...

Where everyone keeps saying..."Your gonna have to pay the HD Coach more"....I find some of that true, but if top level assistants are not gonna get decent OC and DC stipends then you might as well look somewhere else...

Big cities can pay the staff from top to bottom....imo
