Yes, interesting history. We've discussed the origins here in the past and it's also mentioned in Buck Ford's book Down Trails of Victory. Frank Gioviale, the band director back in the 50s and 60s, rearranged the original and composed the PN-G version.

Some of you may remember that this song was part of our marching show this year. We were doing a jazz song and it was chosen specifically because it is the original Cherokee.

We remember all right! But not with fond thoughts. I just listened to all the renditions someone put on here and I guarantee you that none of these will appeal to PNG fans. Why can't people just leave our traditions alone and make some of their own if that's what they want? The Marsalis (sp?) version of 1987 didn't even sound like Cherokee. Until the band we have now, we've always had the best fight song of any school in this area. Let's keep it that way.

It was part of the marching show. We still played our Cherokee in the stands and during the Marching I. The marching show was a jazz show, the original Cherokee is part of a jazz song (Caravan, I believe it was from the 50's), and it was done because it's the original Cherokee and because Mr. Wells thought it would appeal to our fans. He was trying to keep you and the rest of our fans happy. Why can't you just accept this year's marching show for what it is?

[/quote]Sorry, Dawg--you didn't know they've already changed it. No disrespect to you--just a sore subject with the fans.

Nothing has been changed, squaw. Caravan was part of a marching show. It had no effect on the way Cherokee is played. If you don't believe me, go look up the 1999 Brazosport playoff game on YouTube (YouTube won't let me embed it on this site, sorry). No traditions have been changed.

Yes, as a matter of fact, they did. The tempo changed in the 90's, and the volume changed when the band started shrinking about five years ago, long before Mr. Wells or Ms. Beckcom were associated with our band. This year's marching show had absolutely nothing to do with either the volume or the tempo. Those things were changed years ago. Again, if you don't believe me, go look up the 1999 Brazosport playoff game on YouTube (again, sorry, but YouTube won't let me embed the video on this site).

Did I mention that the band is growing next year? You have our current directors (high school and middle school) to thank for that.

Growing by how much?

Approximately 20-25 members. The only section that will have a net loss is the tuba section, and that is only because one of the sophomores is moving. All other sections will either have a net gain or have the same amount of players as this year. The most notable gain will be in the trumpet section, which is losing 3 seniors but gaining 14 freshman, meaning a net gain of 11 and a grand total of 25 trumpets. I believe the trombone, percussion, and french horn sections will gain a few members as well.

I was just thankful to see the volunteer band at the Purple vs. White game ... nice job by the band directors and the volunteer students.

Off topic, as an aside, I kind of like the jazz version of Cheerokee ... it's a smooth sound ... nothing wrong with a little variety ... variety is a spice of life.

Go Indians. Peace.

What about drums? Hopefully, more and louder.

I think we gained a snare or two, but we still have four base drums and a quint. But, having spoken with some of the middle school directors, the percussion section will increase in size considerably for the 2010-2011 school year. PNMS has a nice amount of 7th grade percussionists this year and the GMS band has been growing and will continue to do so thanks to its new, stable leadership. The band is expected to continue to have net growth for the next several years.

Sort of exciting, isn't it? And to think that the whole band will be making strides like this in the coming years. I'm just mad that my time in the band is limited.

OK, I admit it--I'm excited to hear about more percussionists!

In terms of the percussion section, it's small, but it's a start.
