in light of the tragic death of Reggie Garrett, should the physical have an EKG, Echocardiogram , done? Should a non bias doctor do the physical instead of a family doctor? What are your thoughts on this?

Yes, an EKG should be included and in my opinion the Doc. should be independent and payed for by the local district.

Thank you for asking for our input, really appreciated. This dialog goes a long way with voters!

As a Nurse, I agree!! Maybe even an MRI or CAT scan of the brain at least once, I know they are VERY expensive, but you can't put a price tag on a kids life.

You mean to tell me that the school should pay for ALL kids physicals who are in Football, Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Track and Field, Cross Country, Soccer, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Indianettes and any other sport that I have missed. Also should that be just Varsity or all levels of HS play? That would be a lot of money for the school district to me out considering the number of kids that are in all of these programs.

From what I have read in print news and seen on some televised discussions on this subject, measuring the performance of the heart at rest will not provide any real insight as to how it will react under the stresses of exhaustive physical exertion. It would seem to me that if a district really wanted to invest in pre-cautionary testing for athletes, they would need to look for some other type of testing such as a stress test or even a nuclear stress test to be more sure of a kid's current health before participating in extra-carricular sports. But to be more pragmatic about it I believe everyone should be very careful with where this could lead. PLEASE don't misunderstand what I am about to say I too feel very deeply about what happened to Reggie Garret this past Friday night but I believe in the end the numbers simply won't justify that type of intensive testing for high school athletes to compete. For one thing the money to pay the expense associated with it would have to come from somewhere. This would only give more ammo to those who argue that sports are not needed in public schools. Also, what is the rate of occurance for this type of problem? when you look at how many kids take to the field every Friday night across the country then look at how many times this actually happens more than likely it becomes less important in the budget than other items that benefit the whole. Again, I am very sorry for the Garret family and am praying for them and all of the kids on the team and in the stands who witnessed this terrible tragedy!

Well, then we should get a volume discount then!

The reality of it is that whether he was on the field, or sitting at home listening to the game on the radio, when you're going to have a massive heart attack (or what ever happened to the poor kid), it can happen anywhere. I know, I know, his heart rate was elevated, yadda, yadda, yadda. But those same actions can happen in a P.E. class too!

Bottom line, it's a tragic, horrible occurrence, that was most likely destined to happen (sadly).

Great points carzan and Proud...From what I have read, they haven't determined a cause of death yet, so why are we calling it a heart issue? Also, an EKG will not detect ALL heart problems. I am heartbroken for the WOS community and especially Reggie's family. I can't imagine the pain they must be in right now.

I heard that the initial ruling was massive heart attack. This came from someone who is friends with his dad. As to the subject of the post, the tests being discussed are very expensive. I don't think the district would or could assume that financial responsibility for all the kids participating in activities. That being said it would fall to the parents. Most health insurance companies will not pay for these expensive tests without justification for having them done. My husband recently had a PET Stress test. He has had by-pass surgery twice and we had a battle getting the test approved by our insurance company. The tests would be nice and comfort a lot of parents, but the only real comfort you have is that God has your child in the palm of his hand.

Based on what Garret's mom said in the PA News he had a seizure when he was three years old due to a high fever but since then had been healthy. Which one of us could have told our son he couldn't fulfill his dreams and potential due to that? I couldn't. Our purple blood just runs to deep and I am sure he felt the same way about WOS since his dad played on a state championship team there. It is just a tragedy. He dreamed of taking his play to a higher level and I have to think that dream is being fulfilled. As difficult as it is to accept sometimes, we have to believe that God's will is what is most important. Being human, I can't help but wonder sometimes why some really good folks get called first. Perhaps, it is to give some that aren't making the right decisions, a chance to change their ways.
