Tackling

Interesting. The UIL has a mandatory tackling training and certification for coaches. The training is provided by Atavus and is used by Univ. of Oklahoma, Univ. of Texas and other university and pro teams.

Of course the key is making contact, wrapping up and finishing the tackle. If there is not sufficient force behind the hit, it becomes arm tackling and a good runner will run through any arm tackle. This can only be perfected by practicing the learned techniques.

Times have changed. I can still hear Coaches Hooper and Cobb screaming, put your helmet/facemask in the chest of the ball carrier, wrap up, and drive him to the ground like a heat seeking missile. Go full speed and be violent. In practice, after hitting someone or getting drilled by someone, laying the ground waiting for the stars to disappear, you could hear Coach Hooper yelling, "get up, you are killing the grass!" Coach Cobb used to scream, "if you see someone wearing a different color jersey from yours, and he has the football, then knock the snot out of him...that is your job...do your job!"

Go Indians.

What I’ve seen high school and college players do is run up to the ball carrier and stick their arms out and try to hug them to the ground. And almost as if their eyes are closed while trying it. Any player seen doing that in the Ethridge years would have been yanked out of the game. That type of non-aggressive play does not work. If the shoulder/no helmet technique is going to be used then at least go 100% and do it right.

Let's face it, the good ole days of real football are gone...they are always trying to find a way to "Make things safer". In the process of doing that, the way things are taught is much different now...no taking with your head first, otherwise your spearing etc. I'm all for making helmets safer etc, but it is starting to get ridiculous with other various aspects that they are changing with the game.

Agree. Not much is the same and not for the better. Throw in the politicization of sports and you have the perfect reasons to forget about it all. I don't watch the NFL or any pro sport any longer and the NCAA is right there with them. If tackle football is going to continue down this path then just go ahead and give them flags. ;)

Yes, I cut out all Pro Sports (MLB, NFL, NBA etc) since they went "Woke"....and now I hope they go broke. It started with the NFL not standing during the Nat Anthem and progressed to the rest of the sports. At the end of the day, they try to make the sport safer which is great, but they ruin the game in the process. Let's face it, football is a physical sport by nature, so injuries are going to happen bottomline.

This picture even looks incorrect to me. Whatever happened to “put your head across the bow!!!” This tackle looks like a strong ball carrier would run right through his arms; his head’s also down looking at the grass. I miss the good ole days of tackling for sure!

That's awesome ...gotta love Ray's attitude "That's how you play football ..in the old days, you see that color, that's how you know who won."
