PORT NECHES-GROVES INDIANS
HEAD COACH: Brandon Faircloth (62-31, 8 years)
LAST YEAR: 11-2, 7-1 (Regional Finalist)
DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS: 25 (2 straight)
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: 3 (1953, 1955, 1975)
STATE FINALIST: 3 (1954, 1977, 1999)
Powered by an offense led by super sophomore Roschon Johnson, PNG grabbed a share of the district title for a second straight year before falling in the Regional Round of the playoffs. Even with losses on both sides of the ball, the Indians should contend for a district championship.
Six returners highlight PNG’s spread offense that scored nearly 37 points a game. Highly recruited junior QB Roschon Johnson is expected to be even more explosive with 13 varsity starts under his belt. As a sophomore Johnson accounted for nearly 4,000 yards of total offense with 56 touchdowns. If a young offensive line can come together, scoring shouldn’t be a problem for Big Purple. Preston Riggs and Preston Hughes are back along with wide receiver Cameron Stansbury.
PNG has five returners on defense, led by linebacker Austin Bost. Last season the “Landsharks” were solid despite being on the field for large portions of the game due to a quick-strike offense. The Indians held opponents to 22 points a night. Linebacker Alec LeBouef and defensive lineman Sergio Ayala should also have big roles this season.
