FINAL: Port Neches-Groves Indians 46, Montgomery Bears 38

If I’m not mistaken, tonight’s game secures PN-G its third consecutive outright district championship—a feat accomplished only twice before in school history (1952-55; 1974-77; 2015-18). If we count seasons in which we claimed only a share of the district title, it’s the fourth time in school history.

It also brings PN-G a 9-0 record for the first time since 2009. If we win next week, the Indians will secure an undefeated regular season record and go 10-0 for the fifth time in school history (1946; 1976; 1977; 2009).
Was that the miracle kick -2 season?

Now LETS GO MONTGOMERY BEAT SOC!!!
Depending on when and where they play, that would be a good game to go watch. As long as they dont play on the same day that we do, I would wear my purple and sit on the Bears side. I agree with what Rez said. Montgomery needs to commit more to the run if they want to have a shot at beating good teams.

Montgomery adjusted to stop the run. But the PNG offense didn’t adjust to counter it. Running the same plays with Henry that they know are coming. Flip the script and take advantage of the aggressiveness.
The Bears DC did a great job at making adjustments at Half. They stacked the box and shut down the middle. What did we do? Keep running the same plays with Henry. Since they were stacking the box, running that reverse with Gohlke would have been a great call to make. I'm sure that our coaches will study the film and see that as an option the next time.

Dont forget the screen pass for 60.

My bet would sadly be Waco which is a little to far out the way for me but MAYBE they could get College Station.

Regardless of the Dayton game, and next week's Game for Montgomery?
If we lose and Montgomery wins next week, our district records will be tied but we’ll have the head-to-head win. If our understanding of the rules is correct, that means we’re district champs even with a loss to Dayton. but, well hopefully skip that part. Dayton has something to play for (I think if they beat us and West fork beats Lake Creek, Dayton’s in the playoffs). We’ll have to take them seriously.

Watched Dave Campbells last night. They said we win the District Championship last night. Just backing up what you are posting.

The Dayton - Montgomery game was a scorefest, although I think Montgomery was in control. Dayton's QB has been injured lately but may be back for our game. Definitely should take them seriously, regardless.

Re last night's game, the play calling wasn't the same as last week's Nederland game. Less utilization of some of the speedy receivers on reverses and end-arounds, and more screen passes and short routes. I sure was glad to see the long pass to #10 to end the first half, that was huge, for the team and for #10 himself.

To those who were in attendance, how was it in the stands without the band? Were the Indianettes still there to cheer, and cheerleaders too of course.

The indianetts stayed and they had some kind of loud speaker to play Cherokee.
The faithful fans stayed with it to the end.

I was asking the same thing.
We were less predictable.
Montgomery was blitzing the house so any running play wouldn't be as good as short quick passes which worked for us.

Do you all think since PNG has gotten the district title that next week PNG will rest some starters to get ready for the playoffs

Montgomery's district leading running back Keldrid Ben was averaging 132 yards per game and 11.9 yard per carry through 8 games. Last night he finished with 105 yards and a 5.8 yard average.

Bear QB Jack Merryman was averaging 53 yards per game rushing and 7.6 yards per carry coming into this game. As predicted, the Bears utilized the QB runs to their advantage and he gained 193 yards and a 12 ypg average and 3 touchdowns against the Indians.

Merryman didn't fare as well with the pass. Prior to the game he was averaging 154 ypg and a 63% completion rate with zero interceptions. Against the Indians he completed only 33% for 175 yards and had 2 interceptions. If not for the one 72 yard pass to #3, it would have looked much worse.

Overall Montgomery gained 474 total yards, which was slightly above their season average. To their credit Montgomerycame to play and had a good night offensively. But the Indian D was able to counter and slow them down considerably in the second half. Great halftime adjustments and effort by the PNG defense. They lead the district in turnover ratio and added to that last night.

What was our total yards? I think we were way too conservative in the 2nd half.
