FINAL: Port Neches-Groves Indians 46, Montgomery Bears 38

The outside containment on that long QB run is unusual. Normally the OLB would have contain but he is committing to the inside run. Fix that and those edges will be much more secure.

My initial impressions from the game:
Special teams, solid.
Kicking, solid.
Run and Pass, solid.
Play calling Unpredictable, improved
Penalties and mental mistakes, improved
We have definitely improved. I was looking for a game where it all came together. This is that game. We would not have won if we had not.
Montgomery gave us everything they had and tested our limits in ever way.
IMO, This was our most exciting game so far. What a game. It had everything.
Montgomery should go deep into the playoffs. They are going to be a challenge this year and next.

we need to figure out how to send the catch at the end of the half to DCTF. That’s the play of the week if you ask me.
Absolutely! That had to be the most EXCITING play of the season so far and one we’ve all been waiting for! I bet the fans at the game, everyone watching the live stream, and our 92.5 crew went totally BANANAS!! I know all of us watching at my friends house did and the whole neighborhood probably heard us…lol! I’m so glad that young man FINALLY got his “moment” and watching his teammates celebrate with him was icing on the cake!!

If I’m not mistaken, tonight’s game secures PN-G its third consecutive outright district championship—a feat accomplished only twice before in school history (1952-55; 1974-77; 2015-18). If we count seasons in which we claimed only a share of the district title, it’s the fourth time in school history.

It also brings PN-G a 9-0 record for the first time since 2009. If we win next week, the Indians will secure an undefeated regular season record and go 10-0 for the fifth time in school history (1946; 1976; 1977; 2009).
I am not sure whether some might consider it nit-picky of not, but I would not consider it an “outright” championship if we end up tied with Montgomery for the district lead, regardless of whether we have the top seed due to the head to head tiebreaker. I mean we could clearly be viewed as the “true” champions if we beat the only team with as good a record as us, but i think we could in some sense still be viewed as co-champions if we lose to Dayton. In any case, we hopefully will beat Dayton and make it a moot point.

10 and 0 or bust!

The Bears DC did a great job at making adjustments at Half. They stacked the box and shut down the middle. What did we do? Keep running the same plays with Henry. Since they were stacking the box, running that reverse with Gohlke would have been a great call to make. I'm sure that our coaches will study the film and see that as an option the next time.
. Yeah this drove me crazy!

My thoughts -
* our OC needs to be vastly more creative if we’re to stand a chance in the playoffs. Practice it.
* I emphatically cannot stand when our players do not wrap up. Is that a new thing?? Maybe, but it is minimally successful at best. Wrap up, grunt/gowl, and punish.
* there are guys on our secondary who seem afraid to HIT. Won’t name them, but you can see it for yourself. Take their **** heads off. One in particular seems to just be glad to be out there. Punish the opponent!
* lord knows I hate the pooch kick. I don’t get it, especially with an offense that can move the ball. Stay in your lane and punish.
*. The highlight for me was seeing #10 finally come alive. Dude has talent and hopefully some new found confidence.
* we drop way to many passes and the timing has seemed off all year. Overthrown or dropped.
* we looked out of shape - lots of hands on hips and slow to get up - why is that at this point in the season?
* Henry had some good runs - but dude looked exhausted to me.

I believe - I do - but bigger picture, we’re not #3 and you all know it. I don’t out much into that, but USE it as motivation.

Good observations. The Indians have looked better conditioned than every team I’ve seen them play. With Henry and anyone else, even a 16-17 year old has to catch his breath now and then and let the heart and lungs replenish the oxygen. Especially after running for hundreds of yards and exerting that much effort.
The tackling is up and down. I’ve seen #5, #33, #35, #19, #32, #92 and others making some textbook tackles all year. I guess it’s situational. Bringing down a 230 pound brute can make anyone look silly at times. Pooch kick is good against a dangerous kickoff return threat. It bottles the returner up in a smaller area. We have been burned too many times by fast return guys. If you can’t kick it out the back of the EZ, kicking it high to the side between the 20 and 30 allows your tacklers to converge and also increases the chance of a botched catch. Especially if the guy is not used to catching kickoffs much. Offensive calls could definitely benefit from some plays that counter the defensive trends. If Montgomery wanted to send everyone including the outside backers, which they often did, burn them with some misdirection and run to the outside. The main problem I observed was the slow development of the runs. Henry is brilliant at finding a hole and bursting through it. But there was nothing but a wall of white and dark uniforms in front of him in the second half. And Montgomery knew what was coming. With this team and these coaches, and their ability to adjust and overcome, I like them as a top team in the state until someone stops them. There is some serious ability on this 2025 team. They’ve just yet to put together their best efforts.
