NDN Press 1st round playoff broadcast APPROVED

All I know is if the YouTube broadcasts continue from other schools after this week then the UIL definitely owes PNG and all others who were told it would NOT be allowed an explanation! I could be wrong but IF it does continue with no repercussions then I’d say the answer is pretty clear that they’re just trying to capitalize off “wealthier” programs like PNG with an already established LARGE online fan base because they KNOW we’ll pay!!

Definitely can’t blame our crew for doing what they thought to be the right thing. And after what I am sure was a period of adjustment to new equipment they did an outstanding job!

I am proud of our student led broadcast team. Their commitment to following the rules reflects greatly about our team and community.
It is also a good idea to respectfully push back on the UIL to reconsider their policies. They are not serving our community very well in this case.
I would at least expect that they provide their "good reasons" for their choices.

Maybe that’s the machine to rage against. What’s their reason for the subjective rules?

Following the UIL rules… but all these others schools did their YouTube broadcasts as usual. Apparently without a single objection from the UIL. Does the UIL have special rules for Port Neches-Groves? If so, why? Unless there is some reason that a NFHS partnership is beneficial in some way to the PNG academic media objectives, this doesn’t sound good. Maybe we’re not seeing the long game.

I say if I was NDN press I would try do it next week without the UIL permission and then if they try and do some suit you show them all the playoffs that are being broadcasted and say why are they allowed and not us.

The thing is, schools CAN request permission to live stream on YouTube and will most likely receive approval IF Victory+ or NFHS isn’t broadcasting their game so that could be why some were able to do it this week. But PNG is one of the most high profile programs with a LARGE online following so if we’re playing, you can bet one of those entities has us on their broadcast schedule. It is what it is, and I respect our decision to adhere to the rules

Great point. That’s probably the reason.

Not unusual to see 7-10,000 viewers for PNG games. That’s a stadium full for most teams.

Bingo.

They supposedly changed the rules, but it was always suspicious to me. Also strange to me is that we are the only STUDENT LED broadcast I am aware of, and it seems to me like that is exactly the type of thing that should be ENCOURAGED by the UIL (I am sure there are probably others but it appears to be pretty rare).
Curious why the UIL would get involved in this anyway. Again -- an explanation is needed!

If they’re giving some schools permission and denying it to png, that might destroy their IP claim. Selective enforcement removes their argument that they’re being harmed by us broadcasting without their permission. We need to wait and see if they punish any schools who went outside the lines. If they don’t go after those schools, but do go after us on the grounds that they own the IP for the playoff broadcasts, we’d have a good pushback. I think if we don’t see them do anything to other schools we should call their bluff.

Let's not sweat the small stuff for now.
Play on, no foul no trouble but reasses later if needed.
NDN press has got this.

The keys to the whole issue are these: (1) Did all of the schools that broadcasted playoff games seek permission from the UIL to do so and were they granted permission? (2) Were any of those games also broadcasted by either NFHS or Victory+? (3) In the absence of the NDN press broadcast on NFHS, were either NFHS or Victory+ SCHEDULED to broadcast the PNG game (4) Did the UIL actually send a “memo” to PNG, or to any other schools, saying that “academic” broadcasts would no longer be approved for the playoffs and (5) If they sent such a memo to PNG (or to only PNG and a select few other schools), why?

My interpretation of the official info avail on the UIL website was always that the rules for this year were essentially the same as during the last few years: As long as no official UIL partners were broadcasting a playoff game (i.e., NFHS and Victory+ during this year), schools could broadcast that game as long as they requested and received permission from the UIL to do so (with the implication being that such requests would generally be approved as they have been in the past). If the schools that had youtube broadcasts this week all (1) requested and received UIL approval for those broadcasts and (2) neither NFHS or Victory+ was scheduled to broadcast the same game, that would confirm that my interpretation of the current rules was most likely correct. However, that would still call into question the supposed “memo” to PNG suggesting that such requests would NOT be approved, which never made any sense to me based on the contrary info about this issue on the UIL website. So provided that the other broadcasts involved a maintenance of the previous status quo, the question becomes whether the UIL selectively sent such a memo to PNG or to PNG and a handful of other “high profile” schools implying that the rules had changed when in fact they had not changed.

Don’t know if they got approval or not but Ennis vs Dallas Wilson was broadcasted by NFHS and live streamed on YouTube.
Anyway I do hope PNGISD seeks answers to all those questions after the season is over because right now, it definitely seems like an attempt to profit from schools with a large online audience.

That would violate even the “old” rules. Interesting.

After further thought, it's not an expensive subscription. The monthly cost works out to maybe $4 per game or less with an annual subscription. And if this supports the media programs, and they are able to continue evolving, why not. Less than the cost of ticket(s), fuel and concessions. Maybe this is about more than the UIL rules. Maybe it's an opportunity to partner with the top streaming network of this type in the nation and benefit from it.
