Yep, we’re going to need a lot of in the trenches, long possession, low-scoring games to go the long haul. Short passes, screens, etc. until Ashworth gains confidence enough to throw the long ball. Kid has the same stature as Bailey and looks a step quicker, so if he can gain confidence quickly then we may have a chance. I can see coach switching it up a bit and maybe asking Guidry to play a bit more QB than he has been as well. Will be interesting, but I have full confidence in the coaches and how they will adapt to the challenges before them.

No, it was the third game of the season against West Orange-Stark.

The fourth game of that season, a state-ranked and heavily favored Fort Bend Marshall team came to Port Neches. And as I recall, our back-up QB marshaled the Indians through the only scoring drive of that game to win it, 7-0.

Frankly, we should have always been doing more short high percentage passes even with Bailey. On most plays we need 6 yards, not 50. We didn’t win state throwing the deep ball. We had a deep ball in 2022 and it was mostly not even available against SOC. Slants, out routes, bootlegs, curls. Just play good defense, hold onto the ball, and keep the chains moving. We don’t need to throw it down the field most of the time. We hardly ever need long passes. I’m hoping having Ashworth in forces us to simplify the playbook.

I agree for the most part. Although we probably do need a deep THREAT to loosen defenses up a bit, we probably did not need to remind teams of that threat quite as much as we have done so far this year. The challenge going forward will be that teams will probably now assume that if Bailey is not playing, there in no longer ANY real deep threat. So we will need to incorporate the type of passing game we probably should have used all along, with mostly shorter higher percentage passes and only occasional deep ones.

I will say that I've known B Ashworth for a long time. He's a solid guy. If his boy plays like his dads character, which he does... then its game on.

PN-G will do what it has always done in big games when adversity sits on top of the Indians, e.g., Fort Bend Marshall (2022), Austin LBJ (2022), Lake Creek (2023), and SOC (2022 and 2023). Squeeze the clock and limit the game to a few big possessions. Chief Jeff Joseph and DC Matt McDaniels are masters at condensing the game to a few big possessions. Whoever plays QB, all they have to do is manage the game for those key possessions and score points when the opportunity is there. No turnovers, run the ball, play defense, and trust the process. Remember the Joseph/McDaniel process is 51-6 with a state championship, state finalist appearance, and quarterfinals appearance. They know exactly what to do and how to do it.

I watched Ennis on utube play this last game. I wasn’t impressed. Coach Joseph and the other coaches have done a great job. Our offense has improved and our play calling much improved over last year. Defense has done outstanding. Coaches will have them ready.

Ive seen Ashworth play Nederland both as a Freshman and on JV better runner than passer but teams thinking that he can't throw deep will pay for it

If game is played in the rain, turnovers will have a huge impact on the outcome of game.
