Future Practice Facility

There is little detailed public information yet on the PN-G bond financed indoor facility. Probably too early in the process.

50 yards? 60 yards? 80 yards? 100 yards? Let the speculation begin until details are revealed.

Here's some insight into what the Southlake Carroll facility looks like. 50-60 yards. Regulation field width. No goal post? Heated. Fan cooled.

It will be a full sized 100yd field with full endzones. It is not going to be “indoors”. It will be covered almost exactly like what Memorial has at their practice field behind their school.

With a reported budget of $9M to build the facility, that doesn't add up. With zero climate control and little protection from the elements.

It’s because the bond is not just for athletic facilities. It’s also for a new bus depot, new maintenance shop, new locker room/weight room, new visitor locker room and also a refurb of the auditorium.

A published breakdown of the bond allocations included $9M for the multipurpose facility. Weather control is the entire point of such a structure. A shade won't help with cold, wind or humidity.

But if that’s what the budget allows, so be it. I’m sure Coach Joseph knows what is best. Even if it can’t be what is considered the best. With options that will benefit over time and across all needs.

From what I understand the only real need is the ability to still practice during lightning. Thus, it’s just a covered full turf field. Like a giant car port. Allows athletes to remain outside in rain or lightning.

That seems unusual as very few high schools choose that route because of the tradeoffs. In no comparison does a covered field provide the benefits of an enclosed facility. Even limited climate control (fans) is an improvement over open air. But if it’s decided by budget, it does no good to stir the pot and question. That’s the last comment I’ll make on the topic but will leave the thread here for discussion.

Given that the bus maintenance and parking facilities will need to be in place to move the buses, the athletic facilities (practice facility and weight room) may be on hold for a while. That will chip away at the budget anyway given price increases.

I can assure you being under what amounts to an open carport is not safe from lightening. They will not have the kids practicing under what Memorial has during lightning storms. It would be fine for hot days. Not so much for cold days or days when it is storming.

Metal buildings like that can actually be a danger in lightning (typed this yesterday so I agree with akifan)

And as I’ve assaulted the equine casualty

GETTING to the structure during lightning is a danger

The main function of an indoor is shade from the dangerous heat

I don’t remember one time at Texas High that we went to the “barn” during lightning or even a bad storm

Only for those who missed it (repeat alert)
(Texas High’s first indoor practice building came in the early 70’s they’re now on their third) it did help for extreme cold which is more of an issue up there in the frozen tundra) (usually 10-15 degrees colder (sometimes) in winter.

$9M will build a top notch enclosed building.
