2026 Baseball

The seeding situation is more complicated than I thought because I forgot that there will no longer be a single 5a baseball champion (glad we won it before this change). Instead, like in 6a football, they will split each district in two at the end of each season, with the two largest schools going to the D1 bracket and the two smallest going to the D2 bracket (regardless of where their records fall among the four teams). Fortunately, in the case of our district the teams with the best records (PNG and Nederland) will both go to the same bracket (D2) and, by chance, we will in fact end up playing the 4th place team (Santa Fe) from district 20-5A in the first round of the playoffs. Date and time TBD.

Would have been a perfect game for me to go to but have a gig in nearby Dickinson. Dern
High chance for rescheduling due to weather IMO. But don’t know when or where a rescheduled game would be held since game 3 (if necessary) is scheduled for Saturday in Port Neches. Stay tuned?

Game 2 rescheduled for noon Saturday at Santa Fe. Have not been able to determine what will happen with game 3 if it is necessary (hopefully not necessary). My guess is it would also be played immediately after at Santa Fe, which would be bad luck for us (losing the deciding game being at home). Only other option would be at PNG Monday, but I am not sure whether they would do that. Hopefully it will not matter. Go Indians!!

Couldn’t be a more perfect day after looking like Soviet Russia for 24hrs yesterday

Well at least if we do have to get lat a second one there
The true advantage in baseball is batting last

Second round matchup will be against always tough Brenham, which won game 3 in 8 innings over Dayton today. Nederland, Barbers Hill, and Sterling have all been eliminated, so we are the last team standing from our district. Go Indians!

Barbers Hill and Nederland were both state ranked at some point. What happened to them?
Not sure about BH other than them having to face an always tough Friendswood team in the first round, which beat them in a close three game series. They did suffer a late season slump, getting swept by both Nederland (a slight surprise) and a pretty good Sterling team (a big surprise) during the second half of district play. They had a fairly inexperienced team this year, losing more of their starters from last year than either PNG or Nederland. This is probably as good an explanation as any for their lack of playoff success. They had a tough first round match up, which was in turn due to a late season slump in district play, and both of those things were probably to some degree related to having a somewhat inexperienced team.

A major strength of Nederland was their hitting and our pitching shut them down, while we squeaked out just enough runs to sweep the series. They did not lose a game to anyone else in district play, so I guess you could say that prior to the playoffs their only major problem this season was us. Their bidistrict series against Iowa Colony was a seesaw affair, with them losing a close game 3 (5-4).
