Baylen Valcin

In 1977, when DeRutte was playing safety, Kevin Delcambre was at defensive halfback, and maybe Doyle at the other halfback, there was a stat sheet hanging outside of the coaches offices in the old brick field house. The Indians had 25+ interceptions over the season. I do not recall the exact number, a 48 year memory is a little blurry. Maybe 26, but that had to be one of the all time season highs, if not the record.

Randy Johnson still holds the individual record of 14 interceptions in a season (1975). I suspect that would have also been a 20+ team total for that season.

In my opinion
(Don’t have any numbers to prove this)
A nowadays interception is equal to 2.5 pre 2010 interceptions at all levels (I can’t pinpoint when it started but interceptions are less and less every year it seems to me
When I was a kid interceptions were a regular thing you would see at least one every game usually multiples
Nowadays at all levels offenses are more interception proof

Speaking of quality DB play, #12 Zane Newby made multiple bone jarring tackles against Dayton. And we’ve seen Malveaux and Valcin making great tackles all year. This DB group has matured quite a bit over the season.
